🎉The UK's first dedicated dialysis space designed specifically for young people. Today we officially opened the new Independent Therapies Centre at Mile End Hospital, a pioneering facility designed to give dialysis patients greater independence, flexibility and control over their treatment. Funded by £3.8 million from Barts Charity, the centre features home haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis training facilities, a dedicated self-care area, and a dedicated space for young people aged 16–25. Co-created with patients, the centre has been designed to feel less like a hospital ward and more like a welcoming community space, helping patients build confidence, develop skills and connect with others. Can AI help us care for more patients at home - without replacing the people who deliver that care? We're piloting Ovia, an AI-powered telephone monitoring service that supports patients who may not use smartphone apps. Ovia calls patients at agreed times, collects routine health information and shares it with clinical teams. The AI system handles routine check-ins, giving clinicians more time to focus on expert care and patients who need additional support. Clinicians remain in control, reviewing information and intervening when needed, and patients are always told they're speaking to an AI system. The pilot is already helping respiratory patients engage with remote monitoring, making care more accessible, identifying deterioration earlier and supporting more people to stay safely at home. What if older cancer patients could see a whole team of specialists in a single visit? As our population ages, more people are facing cancer alongside frailty and other complex health conditions. That's why we're proud to highlight the Older Adult Cancer Service (OACS) at St Bartholomew's Hospital. Bringing together a range of healthcare professionals, including geriatricians, physiotherapists, dietitians and pharmacists, OACS provides personalised, joined-up care tailored to each patient's needs. The service helps reduce the burden of multiple appointments while supporting patients to stay as well, active and independent as possible throughout their cancer treatment. With support from Barts Charity, this innovative approach is already making a real difference for patients like Trevor Inglis, who described it as a "Rolls-Royce service", while helping to share learning and best practice across the NHS. Congratulations to Mr Pramit Khetrapal, Specialty Registrar in Urology at Royal London Hospital, who has been awarded the first ever NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) Academic Clinical Lecturer post in Urology at Queen Mary University of London 🎉 👏 Mr Pramit Khetrapal is a senior Urology trainee and holds a PhD in digital health and perioperative care, focused on robotic surgery for bladder cancer. Starting in October 2026, Pramit will split his time between academic research at Queen Mary’s and clinical practice in University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust robotic cancer surgery team. The aim of this prestigious four-year NIHR post is to improve access to major urological cancer surgery, tackling health inequity using digital pathways such as remote monitoring and app-based patient questionnaires. 🗣️ On the appointment, Pramit said: "I’m delighted to be taking up this post. Having spent much of my training at Barts Health, it is particularly meaningful to develop research that could directly benefit the patients and communities I have worked with clinically. Over the next four years, I hope to build clinical trials that use digital tools to make major urological surgery more accessible and improve the way patients are supported before and after treatment. It is also an exciting opportunity for me to take the next step towards becoming an independent clinical academic." North East London Cancer Alliance
