Young people, children and families in Blakenall have a lot to look forward to as work continues on the full refurbishment of POP. Last week Deputy Leader Cllr Nicky Barker visited the site to take a look at how the programme, which has received funding from the council's Community Capital programme, is progressing.   When it reopens, the new POP centre will provide a modern community space designed around the needs of local people.   Part of Bloxwich Community Partnership, POP (the Positive Outcomes Project) will offer specialist youth areas, a brand new soft play area for younger children, a dedicated party room, youth clubs for a wide range of ages, one-to-one support and family advice.   The refurbishment will transform the building into a flagship community facility, creating more opportunities for children and young people to play, learn, socialise and access support, right in the heart of Blakenall.   We’re looking forward to seeing the next chapter of POP begin! • No job is worth risking your health. Yet many small businesses and independent tradespeople continue to ignore basic, low-cost precautions that help control silica dust during cutting activities. The consequences can be severe, with exposure linked to serious and, often terminal, diseases such as silicosis, COPD & lung cancer. That's why it's so positive to see the HSE raising awareness of this critical issue through its latest campaign.

Employers should provide regular health checks, also called health surveillance, at least annually. The harmful dust generated by cutting and polishing engineered stone is fine enough to reach deep inside the lungs. If inhaled, it can cause irreversible lung damage such as silicosis, COPD and lung cancer. If workers experience any lung or skin health issues, they should report symptoms as they appear. Don’t wait for a health check. Symptoms to watch for include: ■ Shortness of breath ■ Persistent coughing with or without phlegm ■ Frequent or prolonged chest infections ■ Wheezing Find out more about health surveillance: https://lnkd.in/ez2SYRiU

  • Congratulations to our Head of Risk & Compliance, Duncan McNicol and his team on an exceptional performance at this year's RoSPA Awards. The range of awards received by CBES demonstrates the strength of our safety culture and our commitment to continual improvement across every level of the business. From health and safety to environmental sustainability and fleet risk management, these recognitions reflect the hard work and dedication of colleagues at every level of the organisation. Particularly pleasing was the Commended recognition in the RoSPA International Dilmun Environmental Award, an accolade which acknowledges organisations demonstrating excellence in environmental sustainability management and delivering meaningful, measurable outcomes. To be recognised among leading organisations on an international stage is a significant achievement. The awards also included a RoSPA Order of Distinction for 19 consecutive Gold Achievement Awards and a President's Award for Fleet Safety, recognising 13 consecutive Gold Awards. In addition, Duncan received individual recognition for his work as a RoSPA Ambassador. These awards are a reflection of the professionalism, commitment and leadership shown throughout our business every day. A well-deserved success for everyone involved.
