The built environment's skills shortage isn't only about headcount. Mentorship works when it's properly resourced. Apprenticeships outperform traditional graduate routes when firms commit to them. Our MD Maria Sinclair sees this every day, and the pattern is consistent: the fixes aren't the problem. Nobody's applied them consistently, because nobody's had the data to show where the skills gaps actually are. That's what Map the Gap sets out to fix. Cobalt, with BE News, is running two 3-minute surveys, one for employers, one for employees, across the whole built environment, to benchmark where skills shortages are most acute and why. Every response feeds a live sector benchmark and October's findings event, evidence the sector can act on rather than speculate about. Whichever side of the hiring table you're on, this is the chance to put real data behind the skills gap you already suspect is there. Where's the skills shortage sharpest for you, in who you can hire, or in the role you're doing right now? ⛓️💥 Link to the Survey's: https://lnkd.in/gbxK-5nf #MapTheGap #BuiltEnvironment #SkillsGap

What are the biggest skills gaps in the Built Environment? How do we as an industry tackle this? "Map the Gap" is our campaign in association with BE News. If you are an employer trying to recruit or working / entering the industry - we'd love you to have your say. Watch out for the surveys, sharing soon.
As part of our ‘Map the Gap’ campaign in collaboration with Cobalt Recruitment in a bid to measure – or map – the skills gap across the built environment industry, BE News organised a roundtable debate on-site at UKREiiF to discuss what companies and industry bodies are doing and should be doing to address skills shortages. Following the discussion we asked Mark Farmer, chair/founder, Built Environment Futures Assembly/Cast, Maria Sinclair, MD, Cobalt Recruitment and Sarah Hayford, founder and CEO, The Land Collective, what’s the biggest skills gap across the wider built environment industry and what’s the most important factor that will help close the gap? Thanks to The Buzz team for the footage. A write-up of the event will appear on the BE News website over the coming weeks. You can also complete the 'Map the Gap' employee and employer surveyors to help us understand the size of the skills gap. The surveys only take a few minutes to complete, and you will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a cash prize. https://lnkd.in/eqRikRTK We will be discussing progress with stakeholders at a second ‘Map the Gap’ roundtable debate this summer and revealing the survey findings later this year at the ‘Map the Gap Spotlight’ event, to which stakeholders from across the wider built environment industry will be invited. To find out more about how you can get involved in the ‘Map the Gap’ campaign – and play your part in helping to close the industry skills gap – please contact BE News co-founder and editor-in-chief Liz Hamson at liz@benews.co.uk.

Bi-weekly, Wednesday Market Insights brings together the developments, conversations and hiring trends shaping the built environment. This week's edition explores the issues influencing workforce planning across the sector. We also look at the launch of Map the Gap, Cobalt Recruitment's new industry campaign with BE News, which seeks to build a clearer picture of the skills challenges facing the built environment. The conversation is shifting beyond whether there is a skills shortage to understanding which skills are missing, where they are needed and why. Our Market Signals this week are inspired by conversations happening across our specialist teams. Drawing on insights from Sue Greeff, we explore why sustainability capability is becoming embedded throughout the development lifecycle, while Cynthia Kung's observations from the later living sector highlight how demographic, social and economic factors are reshaping the skills organisations need for the future. If you're responsible for hiring, workforce planning or simply want to stay ahead of the trends shaping the built environment, we hope you'll find this week's edition valuable. The UK built environment doesn't have a hiring problem. It has a skills problem. And the two are not the same. Today we're launching Map the Gap, a research campaign in partnership with BE News examining the widening gap between the talent the sector needs to deliver and the skills actually available in the market. Over the next few months, we'll gather data across the Built Environment through two surveys to build a clear picture of where the shortages really hit and what firms can realistically do about them. The full report lands in October. We're doing this because "there's a skills shortage" has become background noise. Twenty-five years in Real Estate recruitment has taught us that naming the gap precisely is the first step to closing it. James Wakefield Maria Sinclair Jonathan Page
As the new prime minister Andy Burnham comes to power, BE News is calling on the built environment industry to present a united front to government on the industry skills crisis, so that we can take meaningful, collective action to address it. This month, the only quality, free-to-use industry media title that covers the entire built environment industry is launching the ‘Map the Gap’ campaign in collaboration with Cobalt Recruitment in a bid to measure – or map – the skills gap across the industry. We are asking professionals from across the industry, whether they work in commercial real estate, construction, housing, planning, architecture, engineering, law or another part of the industry, to take part in a ‘Built Environment Jobs Prospects Survey’ – there is one for employers and one for employees – so we can identify where the key skills gap lie and establish the cause and scale of the gaps. Our view is that we must measure the skills gap – or ‘Map the Gap’ – before we try to close it and that while there are lots of laudable, well intentioned individual initiatives out there, we need to work collaboratively with organisations across the built environment industry, rather than in a proprietary way within organisations or sector silos, to do this. We then need to speak with one voice to government and demonstrate that the skills gap extends beyond the construction industry and a shortfall in the number of people required to a shortage in the right sort of people with the right sort of skills. Only then can we take meaningful, collective action to tackle the crisis. To support the ‘Map the Gap’ campaign, all you need to do is complete the Built Environment Job Prospects Employee Survey or the Built Environment Job Prospects Employer Survey. The surveys only take a few minutes to complete, and you will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a cash prize. The more professionals from across the built environment industry who complete the surveys, the more robust and credible the findings will be, so please spread the word and share the links with colleagues and industry friends. We will be discussing progress with stakeholders at a second ‘Map the Gap’ roundtable debate this summer and revealing the survey findings later this year at the ‘Map the Gap Spotlight’ event, to which stakeholders from across the wider built environment industry will be invited. To find out more about how you can get involved in the ‘Map the Gap’ campaign – and play your part in helping to close the industry skills gap – please contact BE News co-founder and editor-in-chief Liz Hamson at liz@benews.co.uk. https://lnkd.in/eqRikRTK

New York's one-superintendent rule is reshaping construction hiring. Six months after the final implementation of Local Law 149, its impact is becoming increasingly clear. Experienced Construction Superintendents have become one of the most critical hires in the New York construction market. For developers and contractors, the conversation has shifted beyond compliance. In a market where experienced site leadership is already in short supply, securing the right Construction Superintendent has become essential to maintaining project momentum, protecting programme certainty and managing commercial risk. The organisations best positioned to deliver aren't simply reacting to vacancies. They're planning workforce requirements earlier, recognising that recruitment is now an integral part of project delivery. In our latest article, Samuel Levine explores how the one-superintendent rule is influencing construction hiring across New York, what it means for workforce planning, and why Construction Superintendents have become one of the market's most valuable hires. Exceptional recruitment is about more than outcomes; it's about the experience we create for every client and candidate along the way. Today, we're proud to celebrate our consultants who recently received outstanding feedback from the candidates they've supported. While each voice recognises an individual, it reflects something much bigger than one person or one team. It reflects the standard we strive to deliver across Cobalt Recruitment, regardless of sector, discipline or location. To our consultants, thank you for representing Cobalt with professionalism, integrity and care every day. And to every candidate who took the time to share their feedback, thank you. Your comments help us recognise exceptional work, continue improving and reinforce the importance of putting people first. Whether you're looking for a recruitment partner who will represent your organisation with the same level of care, or you're considering your next career move and want honest, specialist advice, we'd love to start the conversation. Congratulations to this month's Candidate Voices 👏 Chris Sycamore Ella F. Adam Parry Jayne Oultram Ashleigh Pearce
