Social Mobility Month recap: Oracy Day with the Financial Times 📖 One of the moments we're proudest of this month: a room full of people who came in nervous about public speaking, and left ready to own a stage. Social mobility isn't just about opening doors, it's about making sure people have the skills and confidence to walk through them. That's exactly what Oracy Day was built for. "You don't have to control your thoughts. You just have to stop letting them control you." Dan Millman (thank you Romeo Garcia) That line summed up the day. The biggest barrier to good public speaking was never the words... it was the anxiety talking louder than the message. And for many of our cohort, this was the first time anyone had given them the space, and the tools, to quiet it. Huge thanks to Laurence Lee FRSA, Sonny Green, and Jacqui Dobson at the Financial Times for hosting with so much generosity. They created a room where messing up was safe and encouraged, which is exactly what let people discover the gap between "how bad I think I'll be" and "how good I actually am." Watching our brilliant cohort go from tight shoulders to calm, structured delivery in one day is exactly why access and opportunity work matters. 📈 This is what Social Mobility Month is about for us at digilearning: not just opening a door, but making sure people walk through it with confidence. Some opportunities stay with you long after you leave the building. Yesterday, our young people stepped inside TikTok for an afternoon of insight, connection and possibility as part of Social Mobility Month. They didn't just hear about careers in digital. They met the people behind the campaigns, the creators of global activations and the teams shaping one of the world's most influential platforms. They asked honest questions, shared their own ambitions and discovered that there isn't one route into this industry. The room was full of conversations that mattered. New connections were made. Confidence grew. Networks expanded. Ideas were exchanged. By the end of the afternoon, nobody wanted to leave. That's the power of opening doors. For many of our young people, it's not a lack of talent that holds them back. It's a lack of access. Access to spaces they never imagined they'd be welcomed into. Access to people who can inspire them. Access to the belief that they belong. This is what Social Mobility Month is all about. Not just talking about opportunity, but creating it. Cyber careers don't start with a job offer. They start with someone believing you belong in the room. For Social Mobility Month. Our young people from Greater Manchester joined a hands-on cybersecurity bootcamp with leaders from Barclays, Accenture UK & Ireland and Women in Cyber as part of Social Mobility Month. Real skills, back to back masterclasses on getting that job role and the journey. Real, practical sessions with people who've built the careers our talent are now starting to imagine for themselves. Why does it matter? It matters because opportunity too often has a postcode attached to it. This year, over half the young people we've reached came from outside London and days like this are exactly how that number keeps moving. Bringing the room to where the talent already is, rather than asking talent to find their way to the room. Six years ago, we walked into MAD//Fest hoping a handful of young people might leave believing they belonged in this industry. This week, they were on the stage (again)... smashing it... not because someone handed them a microphone... because they'd belong there. Watching our Digilearning talent interview industry leaders, share their own stories and then stay behind to mentor the next wave of young people was one of those moments that reminds you why this work matters. The best part wasn't the applause... it was what happened afterwards... the conversations that spilled into the corridors. The LinkedIn connections. The "Can I buy you a coffee?" The "We're hiring." The "I never thought I'd be here." That's where careers begin. Opportunity isn't just about opening a door. It's about making sure someone is waiting on the other side saying, "Come in, you belong here." For six years, MAD//Fest has done exactly that. They have not only given us tickets... they've given hundreds of young people access to an industry that can change lives. They've trusted our talent with stages, panels, interviews, mentoring sessions and conversations with some of the biggest names in marketing, media and technology. That trust matters. Taking a group of our incredible young people to The Drum Marketing Awards. 🥁 This wasn't just about attending an awards ceremony. It was about access. It was about visibility. It was about showing young people that these rooms are for them too. A huge thank you to The Drum for doing something that meant more than they probably realise. They didn't just give us a seat at the table, they gave our young people an entire table... that simple gesture created something powerful. Throughout the evening, our young people connected with some of the brightest minds in marketing, advertising and media. They asked questions, shared stories, built confidence and discovered that the people leading today's biggest brands all started somewhere. Too often, young people from underrepresented backgrounds don't see themselves in these spaces, not because they don't belong, but because they've never been invited in. This evening challenged that. It reminded every young person in the room that networking isn't reserved for a select few, and that opportunity often starts with a conversation. To our young people, you represented yourselves brilliantly. Watching you confidently introduce yourselves, build relationships and embrace every opportunity made us incredibly proud. This Social Mobility Month, we had the privilege of bringing incredible young people into the City of London to experience an industry that can often feel out of reach. For many, it was their first time stepping inside global organisations, meeting senior leaders and seeing that careers in finance, technology, marketing and professional services really are within their reach. But this wasn't just about a visit, it was about building confidence, creating connections, breaking down barriers. Showing that talent exists everywhere, opportunity doesn't always. Our young people asked brilliant questions, expanded their networks, gained practical career advice and left believing a little more in what their future could look like.
