Just picked up a new badge. Cloud #GreenOps for AI, from Greenpixie. 🌱 We all work with AI and LLMs every day, but this course may stop you and make you think about something wouldn't often questioned, every prompt you send is actually running on real hardware, in a real data center, pulling real electricity. It's easy to forget that when the interface is just a text box. A few things you should be aware of: Every AI request gets broken down into tokens >> before a model can process it. Tokens aren't just text either. ( Images, audio, video and PDFs all get tokenized too) >> and that number adds up fast. A single prompt can generate hundreds or thousands of tokens once you count both what you send in and what the model sends back. [ Your prompt   ↓ Tokenised (text, image, file → tokens)   ↓ Processed on data centre hardware (GPUs, CPUs, storage)   ↓ Response generated (output tokens)   ↓ Real electricity used + embodied emissions from manufacturing ] The environmental cost isn't abstract. It comes down to electricity used by the hardware, multiplied by how efficient the data center is, plus the emissions baked into manufacturing that hardware in the first place. Training a model is a one-off cost. Inference, all of us actually using the model day to day, is where most of the ongoing impact sits. The part you can actually use at work: not every AI task needs an instant answer. Live chat and coding assistants do. But things like summarising a batch of documents or tagging support tickets don't, and batching those instead of running them one at a time is a simple way to cut waste without cutting quality. A genuinely good, to the point course, and you get a cool badge too. Thanks to Chris Ingram and Ross Hunter, Ph. Greenpixie Platform Launch 🧚 I've recently completed my transition to Head of Product @ Greenpixie. Exciting times are ahead. This summer we're positioning Greenpixie as a customer facing platform for the first time. Our interactive app will include a GreenOps Studio to explore tooling, live dashboards and outcomes - as well as a Data Console to access raw data. As part of the free tier, we will be offering a host of GreenOps decision-making tools around cloud and AI deployment - as well as making our compute data for AWS Azure and GCP available to all via api. Anyone will be able to use Greenpixie data to do real GreenOps in 5 mins with no barrier to entry. Of course Greenpixie customers will see the most benefit, with more value and support available in-app than ever before. Thanks to all those who have been helping with this pre-launch. Another landmark year at FinOps X San Diego ☀️ The announcement of a 'Tokenomics' approach to AI speaks to the evolving landscape of our space. The challenge is how to be 'AI-first', without scaling cost and carbon out of control... And the solution is to maximise the value of every token consumed. So how did this inform the conversation? 🧚 We shared a perfect example of tokenmoics in practice: One Greenpixie customer (integrated with Apptio, an IBM Company Cloudability data) increased token consumption across one year by over 250%, while reducing cost per token by more than 60% and carbon per token by over 80%. 🗣️ Our Head of GreenOps James Hall joined the Flexera team on stage to discuss how their purpose-built AI sustainability dashboard is helping more customers achieve results like these. 🗼 And Kevin Leslie showcased the ServiceNow AI Control Tower with embedded Greenpixie Sustainable AI capabilities (coming soon to the ServiceNow marketplace). 🏛️ There was also a huge amount of interest in our Cloud GreenOps for AI Academy course, and many attendees were able to collect their physical badge from our booth.
