More than 500 local residents joined us at our Batts Combe quarry open day in Cheddar over the weekend, with funds raised from ticket sales going to Cheddar Youth Trust. Visitors had the opportunity to experience the sheer scale of the machines used around the quarry, and to learn about how essential minerals are used in our everyday lives. It was a great chance to demonstrate the role the quarry plays in the local area and inspire young people to consider a future in the industry. It’s been a busy summer so far at our Whatley quarry in Somerset, which has hosted eight local students for work experience over three weeks☀ The placements gave them a chance to experience the range of roles and career opportunities we have to offer, from plant operations and production to engineering. We’re committed to developing future talent and supporting young people into a career in the construction and minerals sector. 🙌We’re looking forward to opening the doors to our Batts Combe quarry in Cheddar, for our sold out, ticketed open day event tomorrow. Members of the Batts Combe team will be on hand to talk about all things quarrying, such as geology, blasting and biodiversity, plus we’ll be joined by blasting specialists BAM, minerologists from the Russell Society and experts from Somerset Wildlife Trust. 👏 We’ve been shortlisted as a finalist in not one, not two, not three, but four categories in the Highways Awards 2026! 1️⃣ Small Project of the Year (Under £10 million) for our work with National Highways and WSP to deliver the reinstatement of 10 miles of the A47 Acle Straight in Norfolk. 2️⃣ Highways Partnership of Year award along with National Highways, AUTOLINK CONCESSIONAIRES (A19) LIMITED (A19) Ltd and Sir Robert McAlpine for the 30-year A19 DBFO contract. 3️⃣ Apprentice of the Year for Apprentice Quantity Surveyor Natasha Malloy, testament to the amazing contribution she has made to our business since she joined two years ago. 4️⃣ Sustainability Innovation of the Year for our UK-first trial using hydrogen to decarbonise asphalt production on an industrial scale at our Criggion plant in mid Wales.  Another project that we delivered with Somerset Council, the M5 Junction 26 Chelston Link in Wellington, has also been shortlisted in both the Small Project of the Year (Under £10 million) and Steve Berry Highways Authority Innovation Award categories. Planning green light for Westdown quarry✅ We have agreed planning conditions with Somerset Council to reopen our Westdown quarry, near Frome, marking a major milestone for our quarrying operations in the south west. We’re bringing the 160 million tonne limestone quarry, which has been dormant since the late 1980s, back into use to secure much-needed supplies of this vital construction material. Inspiring future talent at Batts Combe Quarry 🌟 We welcomed two Year 10 students from Churchill Academy, Logan Caulfield and Jamie Lodder, to Batts Combe quarry for work experience last week. During their placement they spent time with colleagues across the site to learn more about the different roles involved in quarry operations. This included the weighbridge, the processing plant and a ride-along in a dumper truck with dumper operator Gary Latimer, who shared his experience of working in the industry. Reflecting on his week, Logan said “I’ve had a fantastic week. It’s been really interesting and has definitely made me think about what I want to do when I leave school, which I hadn’t thought about before.
