Do you enjoy laboratory and fabrication problem solving while working with researchers to help them achieve their research goals? The Department of Physics is currently looking to recruit a Fabrication Facilities Technician. The postholder will play a key role in the operation of the shared fabrication facilities in the Department of Physics, providing support to the running and upkeep of the departmental facilities. Our facilities support students, researchers, and staff with a fleet of equipment covering inert atmosphere material processing, microfabrication and semiconductor processing and sample characterisation. Covering over seven shared laboratories, the position will assist a diverse range of research subjects and projects. What you would be doing As the Matter Fabrication Facilities Technician, you will be responsible for on-the-ground support for our shared facilities. This will involve you overseeing the facilities operations and management, performing routine checks, fault diagnosis and minor repairs. You will have a leading role in the management and maintenance of our glovebox facility, coordinating services and maintaining accurate logs of system performance. You will also assist researcher access to the facilities by providing inductions and training for new users and hands on technical support for researchers. Furthermore, you will assist with risk assessments and COSHH assessments related to glovebox use and hazardous materials. What we are looking for An experienced laboratory user who has strong organisational skills and attention to detail, with an ability to communicate effectively and enthusiastically about laboratory use with a range of stakeholders. You will have: A bachelor’s degree in physics or engineering, or equivalent vocational qualifications. Excellent practical skills in the laboratory. Experience working with inert atmosphere systems. A background in micro/nanofabrication, materials processing, or cleanroom environments.     Congratulations to Shang Yu and our co-authors on the publication of our work on the "Clavina" architecture in Nature Photonics. Clavina is a new version of our fully programmable universal time-bin quantum photonic processor, following “Abacus” (https://lnkd.in/emDu7dtt) and “Babbage” (https://lnkd.in/eYM-VqNT). Clavina adds extensibility, meaning that modules offering additional functionality can be arbitrarily switched in and out of the circuit depending on the desired application. Moreover, a module may include, but is not limited to, additional processor cores which help to reduce loss via “multi-threaded” processing of linear optical networks, inline squeezing, or strong-Kerr nonlinearity acting on time-bins. You will work both independently and as part of UK and international teams tied to the ESA JUICE mission which is expected to arrive at the Jupiter system in July 2031. You will analyse existing magnetic field and plasma measurements at Ganymede, revealing the electromagnetic and plasma environment around the moon and constraining the electrical conductivity of the of the subsurface ocean. What you would be doing You will synthesize existing in-situ magnetic field and plasma measurements around Ganymede, augmented by theory and well-established modelling techniques, to characterize the time-varying magnetic field and plasma environment of Ganymede, which is essential for high-precision electromagnetic sounding of Ganymede’s subsurface ocean. You will regularly interact with other space and planetary scientists at Imperial College London, other members of the JUICE J-MAG team, and the wider ESA JUICE team. You will present your results at conferences and via peer-reviewed publications.   • ⚛️Scientists have captured the first moments of chemical change after molecular ionisation. Using attosecond X-ray pulses, an international team including researchers from Department of Physics at Imperial College London observed the earliest electronic changes that occur after a molecule loses an electron, providing one of the clearest views yet of the process that precede chemical change. 🔬 The measurements revealed three distinct stages in the molecule's response: the rapid decay of highly excited electronic states, the coherent motion of electrons through the molecule, and the first signs of atomic motion that ultimately influence how chemical bonds break and form. Published in Nature Physics, the study provides a rare glimpse of ultrafast electronic processes that occur whenever molecules are exposed to high-energy radiation, including X-rays, energetic electrons and cosmic rays. Imperial researchers including Professors Jon Marangos and Vitali Averbukh played a key role in the work, contributing to both the development of the measurement technique and the theoretical tools used to interpret the results. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eEniAhwi
