This Farm Safety Week, we're highlighting a hidden challenge facing the agriculture sector: underreporting. Agriculture already has the highest fatality rate of any UK industry. Yet new IOSH research suggests the true scale of harm could be far greater. Our survey found that 30% of farmers don't report health and safety incidents due to concerns about inspections, enforcement action or legal consequences, while 34% say minor incidents and near misses aren't considered serious enough to report. At the same time, 81% know someone who has been seriously injured or killed in a farming-related accident. Richard Bate IOSH President and Chair of Council , said: "Underreporting has become embedded within parts of the industry's culture. When incidents and near misses go unreported, valuable opportunities to learn and prevent future harm are lost. We need to challenge the idea that accidents are simply part of the job and create a culture where reporting is seen as a positive step towards making farming safer for everyone." She highlights that as part of our continued support for members, we have a dedicated renewals-only hotline on +44 (0)116 350 0777, Monday to Friday, 09.00-17.00 UK time. And for those looking to join IOSH, our website remains the destination for new membership applications. Vanessa acknowledges that we are currently working through a backlog of membership upgrade requests and appreciate your patience while we process these as quickly as possible. Finally, she recognises the challenges caused by our systems issues for our training providers and said our customer service centre and account management teams will continue to provide support and guidance during this period. Work isn’t a yes or no decision, and OSH professionals know better than anyone that capability lives in the grey. At The Health & Safety Event 2026, the session on the Government’s Keep Britain Working review made one thing clear: supporting people to stay in work or return to work isn’t about saying, “No, it’s too difficult.” It’s about asking, “Yes, how do we enable you?” Maybe someone can do 75% of their role. Maybe 60%. Maybe a small redesign supports the individual and strengthens the team. That’s where OSH, HR and leadership come together, early intervention, prevention first thinking, and meaningful conversations focused on capability rather than limitation. When Gail Burfitt, IOSH Chartered Fellow, joined South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT), she quickly identified an opportunity to strengthen health and safety skills among supervisors, managers and team leaders. Drawing on her own experience, Gail helped the Trust become an accredited centre for IOSH Managing Safely and has already delivered two successful rounds of training. This has led to more proactive conversations about health and safety, increased engagement with safety teams and growing confidence among leaders to manage risks effectively. With plans to roll out the training to 200 staff over the next two years, Gail’s story is a great example of how investing in skills and knowledge can help create a stronger safety culture.
