250 global data centre projects above 100MW were announced between 2021 and 2024. Now, The Guardian reports that Uptime Institute expects roughly half of them to be delayed or not happen. Power supply, grid capacity, construction costs, supply chain constraints and committed tenants are all affecting how quickly new sites can move forward. The UK is investing £80m into defence skills. https://bit.ly/3DNM84t has confirmed funding for 24 universities and colleges, creating almost 2,500 new student places over five years across defence-focused engineering, computing, cyber security and more. While it’s a strong signal for the future defence workforce, it also shows the scale of the skills gap the sector is facing. Two weeks on from Intersolar Europe, a few themes from the conversations in Munich are still standing out. BESS is continuing to dominate conversations. Battery Energy Storage is now a central part of Europe’s energy strategy, with more projects moving from planning into delivery. Grid infrastructure remains one of the biggest challenges. Developers are still seeing projects delayed by grid connection times and network capacity, even where investment and project appetite are strong. The skills shortage is not slowing down. Commissioning engineers, electrical engineers, controls specialists, construction managers and HV experts remain in high demand across Europe. Collaboration across the supply chain is becoming more important too, as developers, EPCs, OEMs and consultancies work together to keep large-scale projects moving. Last week, the JAM team held a charity Bake Off and sales day to raise money for Maggie’s, our charity of the quarter. Between activities like the Wirral Coastal Walk and the Bake Off, the team has now raised £425 of our £450 target. The day included homemade bakes, team challenges, plenty of office debate over what counts as “homemade”, and a lot of support for a charity doing important work for people affected by cancer.
