Thank you to Oliver Johnson for the conversation and for giving me the opportunity to explain some of the work we are doing at IPFL. In this interview with Oliver Johnson and Med-Tech Insights, we discussed how these technologies are changing the development route for miniature medical components, where micro additive manufacturing fits alongside our other manufacturing processes, and why selecting the right process at the right stage matters. Micro 3D printing is incredibly valuable before a medical device design becomes expensive to change. For parts such as microneedle arrays, microfluidic devices and miniature endoscope components, traditional tooling can require major design decisions surprisingly early in development. Micro 3D printing using the Boston Micro Fabrication - BMF systems at IPFL - Bespoke Plastic Parts gives engineers more room to test the geometry as a physical component first — including very small channels, fine features and complex internal structures — without immediately committing to tooling. That does not mean tooling becomes irrelevant. It means the design can be better understood and refined before that investment is made.
