I have spent part of my morning reading through Frontiers in Digital Health report called "Technological innovation in healthcare: challenges, opportunities and impact on sustainability". In essence, as can be assumed, technology’s success relies less on its stand-alone features and far more on its adoption. Whilst the report sets out some key stats that give the global laboratory tech market a very favorable look as the global laboratory automation and digital diagnostics market is set to soar toward $24 billion by the mid-2030s. When comparing these forecasts to the current implementation trends across the UK and Europe, I am keen to suggest that there is definitely a implementation gap across medical laboratories. According to Cenevo 2026 Laboratory AI Survey and Signify Research's latest digital pathology findings, the market is having to deal with significant adoption barriers: ▪️More than 60% of life sciences and clinical laboratories are currently piloting or exploring AI technologies. Only 5% have successfully deployed these tools into routine, active production environments. ▪️Over 50% of laboratories report a distinct lack of integration between their core systems, meaning high-tech tools are frequently stalled on legacy infrastructure which would need replacing or innovating To combat workforce pressures and manual errors, investment is rapidly shifting away from standalone tools and moving directly toward Total Laboratory Automation (TLA) and unified data systems. It is important that adoption is seamless and integrates well into existing structure for it to be successful and productive for the labs. Main Takeaways: Lab tech vendors must demonstrate how their platforms integrate with existing legacy setups, rather than just selling standalone features to get over these adoption barriers and make sure that the impressive forecast that Frontiers in Digital Health quote, actually comes into fruition. What I also gathered from these reports is that there needs to be more collaboration and partnerships between laboratory technology innovators and clinical laboratory directors to align software capabilities with real-world operational workflows. This is exactly why we are building MedLab Live London 2027! We are designing our event to be the ultimate physical marketplace where diagnostic innovators, LIMS providers, and automation giants can connect directly with laboratory operations leads and procurement heads.
