Last night, founders, finalists and supporters came together at Curzon Colchester to celebrate the very best of the East of England startup community. And now it's time to share our 2026 winners with you. First up: the business that topped them all. 🏆 A huge congratulations to NANOPLUME & founders Theresa Hoffmann, Tara Love and Tafadzwa Motsi, PhD, our 2026 East of England StartUp of the Year. Insulation is one of the fastest ways to reduce a building's energy use, yet the materials behind it have remained largely unchanged for decades. NANOPLUME is changing that with bio-based aerogel insulation that is thinner, lighter and significantly more efficient, created from renewable and waste-derived feedstocks. It's exactly the kind of innovation the UK StartUp Awards exists to celebrate: tackling a major challenge with bold thinking, commercial potential and real-world impact. A standout business in an exceptionally strong field. We'll be cheering them on as they head to the UK National Final at Ideas Fest this September. 🙌

I was honoured to represent NANOPLUME in London this week to accept the award for Most Promising Solution (Transport, Logistics & Supply Chain) at the Innovation Zero World Congress. Our bio-aerogel represents a massive leap forward for sustainable logistics. By combining ultra-lightweight properties with world-class thermal insulation, we are helping the industry solve the "trilemma" of energy efficiency, space optimisation, and circularity. Accepting this award was a privilege, but credit belongs to the incredible NANOPLUME team. Their dedication to turning deep tech into impactful solutions is what makes moments like this possible. Excited for what’s ahead! #InnovationZero #Sustainability #ColdChain #BioAerogel #SupplyChainInnovation

Just as parents claim about their children: 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆. But it is especially exciting if your investor is also your customer. JM doesn't just believe in what we're building. They understand the value of our #BioAerogel first-hand. And they're going to use it. That means real pilots, direct feedback, and a partner with skin in the game. Johan Wiksell + team have a clear, near-term strategy for introducing sustainable materials and concrete emissions targets. That's rare. For NANOPLUME, this is more than capital. It's validation from a major industry player, access to the people who will actually install our product, and collaboration that will directly accelerate our R&D. Let's go!

Why do better technologies still fail to get adopted? 🤨 Ask NANOPLUME! I am sure we all asked ourselves, why some innovations simply dont speak for itself.  The hardest part is not building something new, but to know when the world needs to and making the product or service safe enough for someone to say yes. This edition of Field Notes from the Heart has been a long time coming. Written in collaboration with NANOPLUME and Theresa Hoffmann, it explores what it actually takes for a new material to move from promise to adoption. From informed scepticism to the “lighthouse effect” : this months article about trust, timing, and the invisible work behind making innovation usable.

When Rosa Schmidt invited me to contribute to her latest article on how novel deep-tech solutions break into the world, I was intrigued. But I immediately wondered: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽-𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆? This led us to the following questions: What happens when a technology carries the weight of past failure? How do you rebuild trust? How do you create safety in a skeptical market? Aerogels have been around for 80 years – yet never scaled. So, what makes today different? Is NANOPLUME building, as Rosa puts it, "a technology ahead of its time, again"? Read the article to find out. 👇

1.5 years ago, NANOPLUME received its first investment from SOSV IndieBio – a connection that started through the VC-Founder Matchup. That introduction changed the trajectory of our company. If you’re building in energy or climate, I can highly recommend joining 700+ energy founders and investors at the SOSV Virtual Energy Matchup 2026 (March 2–6). It’s a great opportunity to connect with aligned investors and ambitious founders – and it’s completely free. 👉 Register here: https://lnkd.in/evS4fbNY #EnergyStartups #ClimateTech #VC #Mitigation #Adaptation
