Just a little reminder of why we’re here and a throwback to when we had sun on the south coast (We’ve now forgotten what that feels like)! We’re collecting data on microplastics, eDNA, acoustics, temperature and salinity as we row around the coastline. This will then be analysed by the University of Portsmouth and new data partner The Crown Estate. This is what keeps us motivated when it gets tough!

Rowing around Great Britain in 2026 - collecting crucial environmental data. GB Row Challenge. www.nautilusrowing.co.uk
About us
Team Nautilus is a mixed crew of six preparing to row 2,000 nautical miles around Great Britain in the June 2026 GB Row Challenge - one of the world’s toughest ocean rowing races. But this expedition is about more than endurance, it's a citizen science project. Our boat will operate as a mobile science platform, collecting real-world environmental data around the British coastline, including microplastics, environmental DNA (eDNA), underwater noise, temperature, and salinity. This data will contribute to long-term monitoring, research, and understanding of the health of Britain’s coastal waters. We’re combining human-powered exploration with science, education, and public engagement - using sport as a platform for awareness, access to research, and meaningful environmental action. Our mission is to raise awareness, support research, and inspire communities to care for and protect marine environments - while showing what’s possible when purpose, teamwork, and human effort come together. We’re building partnerships with researchers, sustainability organisations, brands, community groups, and supporters who believe in action over awareness, collaboration, and long-term impact. Team Nautilus isn’t just an endurance race - It’s a platform for citizen science, community impact, and ocean protection.

A tough slog up the Irish Sea but we’re out the other side! Lots of getting thrown out of our seats and surfing waves sideways. Even hit 10 knots at one point! The wildlife has been incredible, plenty of seals, puffins and dolphins playing in our wake! Waiting out some winds in Northern Ireland before taking on Scotland in the next couple of days. Please help us support our amazing ocean conservation charities by donating to the link in the comments below! Aoife, Kenza, Becky, Matt, Grace

What happens to the human body when you row 2,000 miles around Great Britain? We’re about to find out. We’re excited to be partnering with PEAK4, who have equipped Team Nautilus with WHOOP bands and placed us on a full wellbeing and performance programme to support us through one of the most physically and mentally demanding challenges we’ve ever undertaken. For weeks, six of us will be rowing around the entire UK coastline in a continuous cycle of two-hour shifts. The boat never stops moving, and neither does the challenge of managing recovery. In theory, we’ll have two hours off between rowing shifts. In reality, by the time you’ve eaten, changed, checked equipment and squeezed into your bunk, there may be only around 90 minutes available for sleep before the next wake-up call. Most endurance challenges are built around performance. This expedition will also test recovery. With support from PEAK4, we won’t just be tracking our performance data, we’ll be understanding it. "What excites us about Team Nautilus is the opportunity to see how the human body adapts when recovery becomes the real challenge. By combining wearable data with expert coaching and practical wellbeing strategies, we’ll be helping the team make informed decisions that support performance, resilience and long-term health throughout the expedition," Emma Johnson, Director, PEAK4. Using WHOOP data alongside PEAK4’s expertise, we’ll be translating our sleep, strain and recovery metrics into meaningful insights that help guide how we perform, fuel, and recover in real time. How does chronic sleep disruption affect strain? How quickly can the body recover between efforts? How do nutrition, hydration and training influence performance when you’re operating in a continuous cycle for weeks at sea? Through wearable data, specialist coaching, and performance and nutrition masterclasses, we’ll be building a unique picture of what happens when ordinary people attempt something extraordinary. We already started wearing the bands ahead of departure, giving us a baseline before we begin rowing, so we can compare what “normal” looks like versus life at sea. We can’t wait to see the results!
