🩸 Could a simple blood test help transform the future of lung cancer screening? The APPLIED-LUNG study is investigating whether a blood test could help identify people at risk of lung cancer so CT scans can be targeted at those most likely to benefit, with the aim of making screening more efficient, accessible and sustainable. The study is funded by our Invention for Innovation (i4i) programme and Oxford Cancer Analytics, and led by Dr Serena Chee at University of Liverpool and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. With support from Cheshire and Merseyside Cancer Alliance. More than 1,500 people have already been recruited, with researchers aiming to recruit 11,000 participants across Cheshire and Merseyside. In an interview with BBC Radio Merseyside last week, Dr Serena Chee explains how the NHS Lung Cancer Screening Programme works. During their screening appointment, eligible participants may also be invited to take part in the APPLIED-LUNG study by providing a blood sample. "It's really simple. People who are eligible and invited to take part will have a consultation with one of the nurses, in Cheshire and Merseyside we do this over the telephone. A risk score will be done. Exciting news from the #Type1DiabetesGrandChallenge 📢 Last year, we announced plans to establish a UK-wide Type 1 Diabetes Cell Therapy Clinical Trials Network in partnership with NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research). Designed to provide the expertise, infrastructure and national coordination needed to accelerate cutting-edge beta cell therapies into clinical trials and, ultimately, clinical practice, the Clinical Trials Network will help ensure people living with type 1 diabetes in the UK can access innovative treatments as early as possible. Now we're turning that vision into reality. Over the past year, experts from across research, clinical care, implementation and the type 1 diabetes community have helped shape the Network's design. What's next? Despite affecting 2,200 adults in the UK each year, glioblastoma currently has very limited treatment options and poor prognosis, with only 3% of patients living for 5 years after being diagnosed. With NIHR funding, QV Bioelectronics created a world-first implantable device which uses electric field therapy to kill cancer cells that remain in the brain after surgery. The Cheshire-based medtech company has since secured £4.5 million to progress towards first-in-human studies. Co-founder of QV Bioelectronics, Dr Christopher Bullock, said "Our mission [is] to develop technology that can meaningfully extend life and give people more time with those they love.
