Smartphone shipments fall as supply chain pressure increases 📱 ⛓️💥 Global smartphone shipments fell 6% year on year (YoY) to 272.0 million units in 2Q 2026, according to Omdia. This follows the front-loaded demand seen in 1Q26 which gave way to the adjustment phase of the memory cost cycle. Persistently high memory prices disrupted supply, increased component costs, and forced vendors to rethink pricing, product portfolios, and channel strategies. “Price is once again becoming a competitive differentiator. The current memory cost cycle is driving a structural repricing of the industry, creating a lasting shift in how vendors compete on pricing, profitability and product positioning,” said Chiew Le Xuan, Research Manager at Omdia. Worldwide silicon wafer shipments increase 7.4% 📦 The Silicon Semi Manufacturers Group (SMG) reported, in its quarterly analysis of the silicon wafer industry, that worldwide silicon wafer shipments increased 7.4% year-on-year to 3,573 million square inches (MSI) from the 3,327 MSI recorded during the same quarter of 2025. “Silicon wafer shipments maintained steady growth in the second quarter, driven by strong and increasing AI-related demand beyond advanced logic and memory to include power devices, photonics, and other markets,” said Ginji Yada , Chairman of SEMI SMG and Managing Executive Officer, General Manager, Sales and Marketing Division at SUMCO. “In addition, industrial and automotive demand is recovering, while memory price pressures are contributing to constrained PC and smartphone demand. Device manufacturers are investing heavily in capacity expansion, and silicon wafer demand growth is expected to continue.” You can discover more here: https://lnkd.in/eS_qC8xU #ProcurementPro #procurement #siliconwafer #siliconwafer #AI

What factors are redefining Europe’s PCB industry? 🏭 Europe’s electronics industry is entering a period of profound transformation. For decades, PCB sourcing was primarily driven by manufacturing capability, competitive pricing, and lead times. While these factors remain important, they are no longer sufficient for manufacturers developing today’s increasingly complex electronic systems. According to Robert Dam Ludvigsen, Founder and Managing Director of Azitech, customer expectations have changed significantly: “Five years ago, discussions typically focused on lead time, manufacturing technology and price. Today our customers ask very different questions. They want documented compliance, complete transparency throughout the supply chain and confidence that the selected manufacturing partner has both the technical capability and the quality systems required to support long-term production.” You can learn more here: https://lnkd.in/dirGpynF #ProcurementPro #procurement #electronics #manufacturing #technology #supplychain

Why meeting traceability and compliance requirements is vital ⛓️💥 Electronics component production faces growing pressure to maintain compliance across global and highly regulated supply chains. Effective traceability practices help companies verify component origins and meet industry standards that maintain product quality and customer trust. Government agencies have shown they will levy severe financial consequences on manufacturers that skirt export and trade rules. For example, in April 2023, the Bureau of Industry and Security-U.S. Department of Commerce imposed a $300 million civil penalty on Seagate Technology. This followed findings that the company had shipped millions of hard disk drives to a restricted Chinese buyer in violation of federal export controls. New whitepaper warns of data centre commissioning cliff RS UK and Ireland, part of RS Group plc, has published a new whitepaper highlighting that many UK data centre operators could be exposing themselves to unnecessary operational risk by underestimating the importance of MRO supply chain strategy. Richard Graham, Industry Sector Manager at RS UK & Ireland, said: “It’s an industry growing at pace. The priority and focus is on building capacity, getting planning permission, getting the facility built, and online. The ongoing management is something that gets pushed to the back of people’s minds. Rapid expansion will leave gaps around resource and capability, with engineers living hand-to-mouth, and procurement professionals who haven’t yet got up to speed with what a procurement strategy needs to look like.” You can discover more here: https://lnkd.in/g3BUaAun #ProcurementPro #procurement #electronics #datacentres #whitepaper #supplychain

Mind the (band)gap! Since the development of power diodes and thyristors in the 1950s, silicon has been the long-standing dominant material for power electronics across applications ranging from electric vehicles to wind turbines. However, the emergence of wide bandgap semiconductors such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) has enabled industry to push to higher voltages and smaller form factors, while increasing efficiency and maintaining reliability. At the same time, early-stage research into the next generation of semiconductor materials, ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors, threatens to disrupt this space further. IDTechEx expects the power electronics market to grow to $65.2 billion by 2036, representing a CAGR of 10% over the forecasting period. ⛓️💥 How is AI data centre expansion disrupting supply chains? From semiconductors and networking gear to transformers and power equipment, hyperscalers are shifting the supply dynamics for products needed to build AI data centres on a global scale. Those with huge appetites and deep pockets are reserving mass quantities of critical parts years in advance. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the industrial, healthcare, automotive, and other sectors are competing with hyperscalers and one another for limited quantities of key components, which is affecting product innovation, iteration, and repairs. Government programmes come with their own set of challenges, chief among them rigorous, months-long qualification requirements that then lock in a bill of materials. When a part becomes unavailable, the recourse is often costly, time-consuming redesign, and requalification at taxpayer expense. Minor differences, major repercussions, reliable solutions 🏭 With mountains of complex and highly secure documentation and data generated across the electronics and semiconductor manufacturing sectors on a daily basis, managing changes to that information has become increasingly complex, driving a critical need for effective document change management processes and solutions to avoid potentially serious repercussions. In fact, across many industry and business sectors, terabytes of data, documentation, and structured content are generated every single day, and nowhere more so than in the workflows of enterprises across the electronics and semiconductor sectors.
