The inaugural Quantum Football Tournament held last Friday was a great success - bringing together the UK's leading quantum computing companies together for a fun (and gruelling!) afternoon of football, raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. Having been part of the UK's quantum computing ecosystem from its infancy, it was wonderful to see such a striking picture of its growth with over 100 players from seven companies on the pitch buoyed on by supporters. Companies that have been collaborating and competing for funding over several years, turned up to compete instead on the football pitch. Well done to Quantum Motion for winning the tournament and fielding another team which finished third (for me being half English & half Spanish, finishing 1st and 3rd was a recurring theme of the weekend...). Honourable mentions to finalists, Riverlane, whose teams finished second and seventh and semi-finalists ORCA Computing who came fourth. Thanks to Phasecraft for designing and implementing a quantum algorithm to determine the tournament match schedule and running it on Quantinuum's H2 quantum computer. Hats off to Nu Quantum for sporting the most stylish football kit and of course to Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) with whom we kicked off this annual football event four years ago. Thanks to Qblox for supporting the event from afar, generously donating to our charitable cause and providing much needed energy-boosting stroopwafels. Special thanks to Sam Harman for showing his commitment as an investor through his professional (and mostly impartial) refereeing. It was great to see two CEOs demonstrating their leadership skills: James Palles-Dimmock, from the front, scoring 11 goals in eight games (eclipsing Messi and Mbappé over the same number of games), and Richard Murray, from the back, with a robust and commanding goal keeping display. Perhaps in future we will see more of the CEOs on the pitch leading by example...? Above all, thanks to all teams and participants, especially those that travelled from afar, for contributing to such a special and enjoyable atmosphere. I hope this will be a recurring fixture and look forward to meeting on the pitch next year!

Scaling up a quantum processor means packing more qubits into less space but conventional readout sensors take up significant chip area and limit qubit connectivity. In our paper, published in Nature Sensors, the Quantum Motion team demonstrates the first single-electron box (SEB) sensor in a planar silicon MOS process. MOS fabrication processes are the industry standard for Very Large-Scale Integration. This is a compact sensor that achieves state-of-the-art readout performance without the footprint of a conventional charge sensor. By placing the SEB in a parallel row to the qubit dots and tuning the barrier gates to optimise signal quality, we achieve fidelities of 99.92%. A new Hidden Markov Model enables more accurate spin-state classification by accounting for all three accessible spin states, going beyond the standard two-state approach. Constance Lainé, lead author and Quantum Engineer at Quantum Motion, said: “The SEB's compact footprint opens a path toward denser, more connected qubit arrays. What a great week at #ISC26 discussing the advancements of utility-scale, fault-tolerant #quantumcomputing being made possible with silicon. One of our main highlights was the preview of the second #qubitthecat coloring book just released by one of our stellar PhD students, Tara Murphy. Tara's commitment to advancing education around quantum computing begins at the earliest levels of education. To continue the momentum, she has created a colouring competition for children where they can win Qubit the Cat books for their class in school. Submissions can be made at qubitthecat.com. How can quantum computing be used for drug design? Calculating free energies is a crucial step to understand how well a drug molecule will bond to a biological target. A recent arXiv upload by authors from Quantum Motion, Boehringer Ingelheim, University of Toronto, and University of Oxford defines a quantum algorithm that computes free energy differences using a technique called thermodynamic integration, offering performance improvements over prior quantum-based approaches. It’s finally here!! The next quantum adventure of Qubit the Cat! Nearly three years ago, I wrote my first children’s book about quantum mechanics, The Adventures of Qubit the Cat. Since then, I’ve had the chance to share how cool I think quantum is around the world, from the US to Europe to Australia, and to visit schools showing young people that anyone can do science. Growing up in a small town in Ireland, I really had no idea what science actually was. I thought it was only for incredibly smart people who looked like Einstein, and I didn’t realise that being a scientist was evening a possibility for me. I don’t think my 10 year old self would have believed anyone who told her that one day she’d be finishing a PhD in Quantum Technologies at Cambridge. That misconception, that science is scary, inaccessible, or only for a certain type of person, is still something many young people grow up with today. And I’m on a mission to help change that! :) I want to make quantum science fun, welcoming, and exciting. Not scary. Not daunting. Something everyone can feel excited about.
