🍻News: Business rates cuts for pubs welcomed but fundamental reform still needed The Government's announcement today of a 20% business rates cut for pubs, clubs and live music venues will undoubtedly be welcomed by thousands of businesses across England. For many, any reduction in operating costs is positive news. But it also raises some important questions. 🍽️ What about hotels, restaurants and cafés facing many of the same financial pressures? 📋 How will businesses qualify for the new relief? 🏢 And perhaps most importantly – is another targeted relief really the answer? Adam Barnfield, Head of Business Rates, argues that while sector-specific support is welcome, comprehensive reform of the system is still needed. The business rates system has become increasingly reliant on temporary discounts, exemptions and reliefs. 📝 Case Study - Planning permission for Bookham community hub Every successful community project starts long before construction begins. It was our pleasure to support Surrey County Council in securing planning permission for the new Bookham Youth and Community Centre. The project, which broke ground recently, will provide a modern, flexible space for local young people for years to come. Planning expert, James Williams, worked closely with the project team, stakeholders and the local planning authority to navigate a range of planning challenges throughout, resulting in planning permission. Darren Humphreys of Surrey County Council, said: "Their proactive engagement with healthcare stakeholders, local consultees and planning officers ensured we achieved the timescales set out within our Planning Performance Agreement, enabling the project to move forward." The scheme is expected to complete in early 2027, delivering a vital community asset that supports health, wellbeing and stronger connections for local young people.
