Designing Sustainability Programmes Growers Will Actually Adopt We’re starting a new adhoc series. Field Notes is where we take publicly available datasets affecting the food supply chain and look at what they actually tell us. No hype. No overcomplicated analysis. Just practical insights from the data. Our first edition looks at DEFRA’s latest Farm Practices Survey. Dr Thomas Gate explores how sustainability practices are changing across UK farms and, more importantly, what motivates growers to adopt them. One of the most interesting findings? Good business practice remains the strongest driver of adoption, while regulation is dropping as a motivator. If we’re serious about designing sustainability programmes that growers will actually engage with, understanding those motivations is a good place to start. Three years ago I stood in this same field trying to work out what Regen Ag actually meant. Back then it felt like a handful of pioneers, funding small schemes out of sheer conviction, with "sustainability" doing most of the heavy lifting in every conversation. This year I'm back in the same spot, three years on, and the energy in that field is completely different. The stat that stopped me in my tracks came from the Groundswell film and the related One Billion Acres campaign. To make a real dent in the climate crisis, regenerative agriculture needs to reach 10% of global agricultural land, roughly one billion acres. https://lnkd.in/ebJP-VxE That's the honest headline from Groundswell 2026. Regen hasn't scaled far enough yet to shift the numbers that matter for the climate crisis. Walk the schemes and credits tent and you'll find brilliant, well-run projects, doing genuinely great work. The opportunity now is helping more of them grow into sector sized deployments. But here's the bit worth shouting about. Three years on, the shape of the problem has genuinely improved. In 2026 there are dramatically more schemes, more credit mechanisms and more capital circling the space than I've seen before. Still small scale individually, but there are so many more of them now, and that's the raw material scale eventually gets built from. The bigger shift though is that it's not just insiders anymore. "Normal" people, consumers who've never set foot on a farm, are starting to recognise Regen and buy into products carrying the claim. That's a different kind of traction to funding rounds and pilot data. That's demand starting to show up. Loads of good people, doing loads of good work, and the movement is unmistakably cracking on. The biggest challenge in biodiversity isn’t improving it. It’s understanding it at scale. On an individual field or hedgerow, it’s clear what could be done to enhance biodiversity. But to create better and more connected habitats, you need to understand the wider landscape and how farms fit together. That’s where connected data becomes so powerful. By combining mapping, habitat, species and farm management datasets around a single geographic reference, it’s possible to build a far richer picture of biodiversity across an entire supply chain, before asking growers for any additional information. One of the biggest themes from Cereals. For years, agricultural technology has focused on helping people collect more data. Today, most businesses already have more data than they know what to do with. The challenge isn’t collection anymore. It’s connection. The interesting thing about APIs is that they aren’t just a technology story. An API doesn’t create value on its own. Value is created when two organisations decide they’re willing to build connections in a secure, controlled way to solve a common problem. It makes is a collaboration story. That’s true whether you’re talking about assurance, sustainability reporting, supply chain transparency, benchmarking, carbon accounting or farm performance. The future won’t be a single platform holding every answer. It will be built on connected ecosystems where data can move securely between farmers, processors, assurance schemes, technology providers and supply chain partners. The tech is largely here.
