Systematic practices of discrimination against indigenous people and working class youth have fou... more Systematic practices of discrimination against indigenous people and working class youth have found an outlet in measures to contain the pandemic in Argentina.On March 20, 2020, the Argentine government declared a strict lockdown as a consequence of the first cases of local transmission of COVID-19 reported in Buenos Aires. While the virus rapidly spread in middle-class neighborhoods of the city, on April 21 the first case in the city?s low-income urban neighborhood of Barrio Mugica was reported. Asimismo, la pintura de las casas y de los murales genero, si bien momentaneamente, nuevos vinculos interetnicos con el barrio criollo colindante. Los murales tapiete reflejan la complejidad identitaria de esta comunidad, la necesidad de representar en los muros un pasado imaginario y diferenciarse del medio que los rodea, como asi tambien recuperar historias y narrativas pasadas y plasmarlas en las paredes de sus viviendas. El objetivo de este artículo es examinar la experiencia histórica y social del pueblo tapiete que... more El objetivo de este artículo es examinar la experiencia histórica y social del pueblo tapiete que vive en el Chaco argentino, boliviano y paraguayo en relación con su lengua. Asimismo, examinamos los vínculos al interior de este pueblo más allá de las fronteras nacionales, como así también los contactos con otros grupos indígenas y no indígenas en situaciones plurilingües, y con respecto a políticas lingüísticas diversas que generan situaciones de uso, mantenimiento, retracción o revalorización de la lengua originaria. El artículo describe el modo en que los encuentros evangélicos y políticos, que han constituido un punto de encuentro transnacional entre los tapietes, han potenciado o disminuido el uso de la lengua dado que es en estos espacios donde la comunidad se reúne y se observan eventos de habla significativos. El artículo es el resultado de investigación lingüística y etnográfica basada en trabajo de campo, que incluyó observación participante, entrevistas y documentación de prácticas comunicativas en su contexto etnográfico llevado a cabo en comunidades tapiete de Argentina, Bolivia y Paraguay desde el año 2002.

Topics ran- ging from soccer to human rights are expressed on walls and provide a text to learn about the nation’s social and political life. In the last few years, mural art has grown significantly and is seen in neighborhoods of all social classes. For instance, the Mu- nicipality of San Martín began to embellish impoverished and neglected neighbor- hoods by inviting artists to paint murals on the walls of abandoned factories, ware- houses and residences. Large number of textiles and other factories gave San Martín the name ‘City of Industry’. Severe economic crisis and bad governmental policies led to the demise of these industries. The result of these reversals was felt deeply in the neighborhoods of San Martín, with abandoned factories, vandalized buildings, and so on. This chapter elaborates how San Martín neighbors, store owners, and passersby appropriate, signify, identify, and relate to city murals and the spaces they create. It also addresses how or whether these social spaces are capable of generating a true sense of urban renewal.
En Argentina, la ocurrencia de diabetes y otras enfermedades crónicas en población indígena aún n... more En Argentina, la ocurrencia de diabetes y otras enfermedades crónicas en población indígena aún no ha sido suficientemente estudiada. Este trabajo es resultado de una exploración etnográfica de las determinaciones socioculturales y de género de los procesos de atención y prevención de diabetes en indígenas tapietes de la provincia de Salta. La investigación combinó observación participante con entrevistas a varones y mujeres de edad adulta y con diagnóstico de diabetes, y entrevistas a enfermeras y médicas de un centro de atención primaria de Misión Los Tapietes y de un hospital de Tartagal, entre los meses de agosto y septiembre de 2019. En la comunidad se ha observado la creciente presencia de diabetes, junto con la falta de articulación de las intervenciones sociosanitarias con las prácticas nativas de salud-enfermedad-atención; los problemas en la comunicación del diagnóstico y tratamiento; y las dificultades de acceso al sistema de salud. This paper presents a synchronic analysis of the diseases during the emergence of COVID-19, the m... more This paper presents a synchronic analysis of the diseases during the emergence of COVID-19, the management and impact of the lockdown, and how the media narrated these events in working-class neighborhoods of the metropolitan areas of Buenos Aires and Gran Resistencia from March to November 2020. We resorted to quantitative methods on secondary sources to describe poverty and syndemics and conducted week-by-week ethnographic and media research on 38 neighborhoods with water shortages and critical overcrowding. As a result, COVID-19 syndemically emerged with dengue, measles, and tuberculosis, and the preventive measures exacerbated institutional and gender violence, the Werther effect, and the neglect of other illnesses. Ethnography revealed syndemics with noncommunicable diseases and the influence of structural violence on health. The media analysis shows interest in the districts associated with the fear of contagion, but they disappear from the media agenda once dispelled.

The purpose of this article is to document the vocabulary, practices, and ancestral knowledge of ... more The purpose of this article is to document the vocabulary, practices, and ancestral knowledge of Tapiete women in relation to reproductive processes (menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum). The research attempts to understand aspects of experiences and related practices and how these are evidenced in the Tapiete language spoken by the community “Misión Los Tapietes” in the city of Tartagal, General José de San Martín Department, Salta Province, Argentina. Moreover, we examine in which ways the vocabulary of the body and the reproductive processes provide ways of understanding meanings ascribed by women. Research is based on ethnolinguistic and ethnographic interdisciplinary fieldwork carried out with Tapiete women.

En las ultimas tres decadas surgieron organizaciones pan-indigenas en las tierras bajas de Americ... more En las ultimas tres decadas surgieron organizaciones pan-indigenas en las tierras bajas de America del Sur, una region que tuvo un proceso tardio de organization politica entre los indigenas. Estas organizaciones han movilizado a los indigenas en tomo a objetivos comunes, como ser la obtencion de titulos de tierra, reconocimiento legal de sus derechos civicos y culturales y el desarrollo socio economico. En el noroeste argentino, los guarani estan atravesando un proceso de revitalizacion etnica. Mas aun, estan consolidando sus organizaciones politicas y redefiniendo su identidad indigena. Los guarani han mantenido contactos transnational con sus pares bolivianos, con quienes estan emparentados; estos contactos han servido para forjar nuevas nociones de pertenencia e identidad Tanto los procesos transnational como los cambios socio-politicos a nivel local les han permitido desarrollar un nuevo discurso y practicas etnopoliticos. Este articulo examina el surgimiento del pan-indigenismo entre los guarani del noroeste argentino y analiza el papel que jug6 el programa de education bilingue intercultural y la organizaci6n indigena en crear nuevas nociones de identidad colectiva. IN JUNE, 2000, delegates from roughly 12 Guarani communities from northwest Argentina came together in the town of Carapari, in the province of Salta to elect new representatives to the pan-Guarani organization, Asamblea del Pueblo Guarani (Assembly of the Guarani People). I was struck by their diversity: delegates had arrived from urban barrios, rural communities, newly formed settlements, and villages bordering with Bolivia.
