Scanning Slides, Negatives and Photos

Hi,
I have a canoscan 8800.
Need to scan old family 35mm slides to view and preserve.
Would like to have option to print at 4x6 and be able to do slide shows on computer and tv and post to internet.
I am very new to this.

What is your advice to the best way to do this?
Settings? dpi, pixels, i am a little confused.
Do not need to get things perfect.

Using Photostudio - Advanced - What settings are the best?
Input - I put color positive film
film size - 35mm mount
mode - color

Output settings
Output resolution - 300dpi
Output settings 4x6 landscape
Data size comes out to 6.17mb

Auto tone - on
unsharp mask - on
remove dust and scratches -low
fading correction - none
grain correction - none
backlight correction - none

I also recieved photoshop elements 4.0 for the mac and have a new imac 24inch. Is it better to use the photoshop elements? Is it better to use iPhoto?

Thanks,
Excel 2004 formula–need help to combine actions
I have a checking account which requires a certain minimum of Visa Credit/Debit card transactions per month, to avoid fees. Their are a few other requirements which aren't causing me any problems.

I have set up an Excel sheet with info when I use either my card, or my wife's card. I'm trying to automatically count the transactions (I know, this is easy to do manually, but I thought the challenge would be fun--no longer fun, but there must be a way).

I have named 2 columns, PayType (which contains several designations including Visa/B or Visa/P, for my wife and I) and Cleared which has the date it cleared the bank account (important especially close to the end of month). I can query either column with a Countif and get a count for each of the Visa designations (2 separate formulas), and another for the cleared date > 2/1/2008.

What I cannot seem to do is see how to combine (nest) them into one formula. Can anyone lend a helpinh hand? Thanks!

First Look: Photoshop Elements 6.0

Rob, I'm using photoshop Elements since very first version for PC. Just before I switched to Mac one month ago, I was using PE6, and still using it until the mac version arrives next month.
I'm a photographer, not a pro. I'm doing a lot of enhancements - levels, contrast, unsharp...etc.
Never tried to do what you're asking. But it sounds like a very basic thing.
You can use Magic Wand, or many other ways to do that.
For sure you do not need the full version of Photoshop.
PE can do a lot of things, so don't worry, and go and order the new PE6.

If you want to know more details what PE can do, just visit www.Adobe.com and you'll know.
Good luck!

Why Macbook Air?

You describe yourself as just an ordinary Mac user and for that reason i would right away say that the Macbook Air is out of the question.

I say that for a few reasons...

The Macbook Air is made for a very specific audience, road warriors. It has less power then any other Mac that you can buy, it has a small hard drive, only one USB port and no Firewire, the list goes on. Although it is light weight, it is not practical for the average Mac user to have.

Exactly. People just have to have enough sense to realize that a Ferrari won't make a practical family car.

The MB can be hooked up to an external monitor if you require a larger display, and it would still be far cheaper than a MBP. You could take the money you save and pick up one of those hot 32GB Touches.

Network Question - Seeing Users on other iMac

I have 2 iMacs and a MBP on my home network. I have multiple accounts on one of the iMacs - this iMac also has an external drive attached via Firewire. From my MBP I can "see" the iMac's main hard drive, the external Firewire hard drive, and one of the users on that iMac and can mount each one of them onto my laptop and access files. The problem is that I can't see any of the other users on that iMac over the network even though they are logged in. I have looked everywhere for preferences to see if there is some way to make these other users visible on the network but can't find anything. Am I missing something? Can you only view one user from a shared computer on the network? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Incorrect reporting of hard drive capacity

Some follow-up: spoke with Applecare - they had no idea why this problem occurred, only that I needed to re-install OS X after erasing the drive. I did a manual back-up of all programs and data that I needed (unfortunately not backing up one of my kids' games and realizing I couldn't find the game disk - goodbye $40!) and re-installed the OS. The drive now shows the correct amount free and I have re-installed everything. Very time consuming but it worked. Hopefully will not happen again.

MacBook Air: More tests

hillstones wrote:I find it hard to believe that people would spend $1,799 for a "second" computer! The base model MacBook for $700 less is what people would buy for a second computer. I am tired of reading reviews that claim the MacBook Air is so small, and it is the smallest thing Apple has ever made. As you all know, the MacBook Air has the same footprint as the MacBook. You can barely open up a MacBook on an airplane flying in coach, especially when the jackass in front of you reclines all the way! You will have the same problem with the Air.

What a waste of money and design. The envelope ad is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. My 5 year old PowerBook G4 will fit in the same envelope! 1 inch vs. 0.75 inches is not that big a difference! Thank God they made a laptop .25 inches thinner! That extra .25 inches really cramped my style! My backpack was just so bloated with that extra .25 inches!

How many times does everyone need to be reminded that 0.75 is the THICKEST part of the MacBook Air? Most of it is much thinner. It tapers to its minimum thickness of 0.13 inches, meaning its average thickness is about .45". That means that the notebook is pitched slightly downward, and does indeed have a lower profile than a regular MacBook. Plus the 12" PowerBook weighed 4.6lbs vs. 3lbs for the Air, ran a lot hotter, and had a smaller screen and keyboard. 1.6 lbs makes a huge difference to a road warrior.
