Ulysses 13 review for Mac and iOS: The best Mac minimalist text editor gets even better

Whenever I tell other writers why they should consider bringing a Mac into their lives, Ulysses inevitably enters the discussion. In fact, this sometimes happens without any proselytization on my part: They simply see me typing on the minimalist app on my iPad or Mac at trade shows or conventions and demand to know how they could use it on their PC. But they can’t, and in my experience alternatives come up short. Ulysses is elegant. It’s intuitive. And thanks to the recent introduction of a couple of new features, it’s more useful than ever.

But it’s important to keep in mind what Ulysses is. It’s not an organizational powerhouse in the vein of Scrivener, which allows for Herculean feats of research collection but ends up wallowing in ugliness in its dogged attempt to be a one-stop shop. Ulysses can organize its various “sheets” into groups with keywords and it lets you search through every one of them at once, but that’s about as complex as its organization gets. It’s not a full-blooded word processor like Microsoft Word, with its tables and drawing tools and WYSIWYG export options, but Ulysses allows you to export documents into a variety of styles (and some of them are even user-made). Better yet, you can publish your articles directly to WordPress or Medium.

To read this article in full, please click here

Early this morning I attended an event in San Francisco in which I saw a smart speaker work perfectly with Siri and Alexa, which pumped out beautiful sound to every corner of a small room for both music and TV, and which seamlessly paired with other speakers scattered throughout a room while using AirPlay 2. It wasn’t the HomePod. Instead, it was the Sonos Beam, a new $399 smart speaker and soundbar that’s everything the HomePod should have been.

And Sonos knows that. The brief presentation was filled with quips about how Sonos isn’t out to sell out ads—take that, Google—and how it wasn’t forcing you into walled gardens (ahem, Tim Cook). Nor did it appear to be empty talk. In the span of little more than half an hour, Sonos managed to deliver a vision of a smart speaker that I wouldn’t mind plunking down $400 for. Here’s why we think it’s so much better.

To read this article in full, please click here

It was as absolute an answer as you could possibly get. Is Apple merging iOS and macOS? “No,” said Apple software chief Craig Federighi, with an animated accompaniment smashing down on the screen behind him.

And yet... Federighi made that comment just moments before he unveiled a new system, being worked on by Apple over multiple years, that will allow the developers of iOS apps to bring those apps to the Mac more easily. And first up will be Apple itself, which is using this approach to translate the iOS Stocks, Voice Memos, News, and Home apps for macOS Mojave, coming this fall.

To read this article in full, please click here

It looks like iOS 12 may shape up to be one of Apple’s best releases in years. It’s not a complete overhaul of the iOS ecosystem, but rather a welcome refinement on iOS 11. It takes the big steps from the iPhone X and iOS 11—like Animoji and ARKit—and extends them in ways that make them truly useful.

We’ve got a list of all the big iOS 12 features, and even a list of major features that Apple didn’t talk about during its WWDC keynote presentation. Apple had a lot to say about its four main OSes—so much so, in fact, that some of iOS 12’s most interesting features didn’t even make the cut. But even beyond longer Animoji messages and AutoFill passwords, there were a few missing announcements that point to something big on the horizon (and I’m not even talking about MacBooks).

To read this article in full, please click here

As a parent whose 6-year-old just got into a couple of ridiculously time-sucking iPad games, I welcomed the announcement of the new Screen Time feature coming to iOS 12.

But, unfortunately, Screen Time doesn’t account for a basic reality: Plenty of families share an iPad.

Without user accounts in iOS, the activity reports and time-limiting features in Screen Time just won’t work as intended if multiple people in a household share any one device. The Mac has user accounts and fast-account switching, but iOS does not. Amazon’s FreeTime Unlimited service lets parents give different permissions to each kid, and track the activities of each individual separately, but I’m not holding my breath for Apple to follow suit.

To read this article in full, please click here

11 fantastic iOS 12 features that didn't make the WWDC keynote

iOS 12 was certainly the star of yesterday's WWDC keynote. From performance improvements to ARKit 2.0 and group FaceTime calls, the next version of Apple's mobile OS is so jam-packed with features that Apple couldn't fit all of them in the hour it carved out for the iOS 12 demo. Here are 11 awesome features Apple didn't talk about that you need to know.
<!--
FaceTime integration with Messages

While FaceTime and Messages will still be separate apps in iOS 12, they're getting much tighter integration. Instead of jumping over to FaceTime when you want to switch from typing to chatting, you'll be able to start a group FaceTime message right from a group Messages conversation. You'll also be able to see and join active calls from your conversation list or inside existing conversations.

To read this article in full, please click here

This year's WWDC is all about software. That means no new Mac announcements, no low-cost HomePod, no iPhone SE...nothing but iOS, tvOS, watchOS, and macOS. There was still plenty to get excited about. Apple's upcoming operating systems are going to deliver a host of welcome improvements and new features when they release this fall. Here's everything Apple announced at its WWDC 2018 keynote presentation, along with links to our deeper coverage.

iOS 12
