Multiplayer games are on a roll lately. By now you probably already know about Hammond, the adorable hamster who rolls about in an iron wrecking ball of death in Overwatch (and whom we tried out in a recent PCWorld Twitch stream). They’re the sixth mount in the newish Path of Fire expansion following the existing Raptors, Griffons, and the like, but they’re also likely the best mount I’ve ever ridden in an MMORPG.

To read this article in full, please click here

Updated 07/03/18: Apple has released the third developer beta.

Apple both sets trends and chases them, and iOS 12, unveiled Monday at the WWDC keynote, is no exception. With this release, Apple is focusing on performance improvements and enhancements, even for older devices. The company is also making important changes to augmented reality that will enable new experiences; improving Siri, FaceTime, and the Photos app to catch up to the competition; and adding new features like personalized Memoji and weekly reports about how you’re using your device.

iOS 12 will be a free update for all users this fall, and it’s supported by every device that runs iOS 11, all the way back to the iPhone 5s released in 2013. Here’s a rundown of the biggest improvements in iOS 12.

To read this article in full, please click here

Right turn ahead: The maps in Apple Maps are getting re-mapped

During WWDC earlier this month, there was one app that was conspicuously missing from the iOS 12 demo: Maps. It turns out, Apple actually has a lot to say about Maps, it just isn’t the stuff of ooh-and-aah demos. Instead of adding AR directions or AI-powered restaurant recommendations, Apple is tackling the biggest problem with Maps: the maps.

A new report by TechCrunch’s Matthew Panzarino outlines Apple’s major undertaking to replace the array of third-party navigation data in Maps with first-party data collected by cars and users. This isn’t speculation—Panzarino got to ride in one of Apple’s mapping cars and spoke to senior Vice President Eddie Cue at length about the new project, which is years in the making.

To read this article in full, please click here

Of course, not all of us are well-seasoned grill masters, and even those of us who are can use a little help making sure our meat is cooked to perfection.
iOS 12: How to turn on and use the thesaurus

Many past iOS releases let you look up definitions with a built-in dictionary with “Look Up,” but with iOS 12, we get access to a built-in thesaurus as well. As a writer, I find this a godsend. My beloved Oxford American Writer’s Thesaurus was one of the casualties of iOS’s transition to 64-bit apps, but now it’s part of the operating system itself.

Even better, the feature works with most iOS word processing apps. The only catch is that you’ll have to turn it on. Here’s how to do it.

How to enable the iOS 12 thesaurus

Open Settings.

Press General.

Scroll down to Dictionary. Press it.

Select “American English: Oxford American Writer’s Thesaurus.”
