Listen to news

With Google Home, you can listen to top headlines, get the latest on a certain category of news (like sports, weather, business, tech, etc.), or ask about a specific news item.

Ask for the news

Here are some ways to talk with your Google Assistant on Google Home when choosing and listening to news reports and headlines:

To do this: Say "Ok Google" or “Hey Google," then...
Listen to the latest news “Catch me up,"  “Listen to the news," "Tell me the news"
Listen to news from specific provider  “Listen to NPR News," "Play BBC Minute"
Listen to the latest news about a specific news category “What’s the latest in sports/business/technology?”
Pause  "Pause" or "pause the news"
Resume "Resume" or "Continue playing"
Stop "Stop " or "Stop the news"
Play next news story   “Next”, “Skip”  
Rewind  "Rewind," "Rewind x seconds/minutes"
What’s playing (news) “What’s playing?”
“What news is playing?”

Other ways to control news 

You can also control music by touching the top surface of Google Home or by using the Google Home app. 

From the Google Home device

To do this: Touch the device like this: Image
Play / Pause / Stop alarm or timer   Tap once on the top of the device
Turn up the volume 

Swipe clockwise on the top of the device.

Note: This only adjusts the volume of media. You can adjust alarms and timers volume anytime in the the Google Home app.
Turn down the volume 

Swipe counterclockwise on the top of the device.

Note: This only adjusts the volume of media and your Google Assistant. At volume level 0, all media will be muted but your Google Assistant will still speak at a minimum level.  It doesn’t adjust the volume of alarms and timers.
Start your request  Press and hold down on the top of the device

Turn up the volume 

Tap on right side of Mini.

To reach maximum volume, tap to volume level 10.

Note: This only adjusts the volume of media and your Google Assistant. At volume level 0, all media will be muted but your Google Assistant will still speak at a minimum level.  It doesn’t adjust the volume of alarms and timers.
Turn down the volume 

Tap on left side of Mini. 

10 total taps will mute all audio except your Google Assistant.

Note: This only adjusts the volume of media and your Google Assistant. At volume level 0, all media will be muted but your Google Assistant will still speak at a minimum level.  It doesn’t adjust the volume of alarms and timers.
Play / Pause / Stop   

Note: You can't tap on the top of Mini to control media.

Instead, say "Ok Google <pause/play/stop>".

  
Start your request 

Note: You can't press and hold the top of Mini to start a request with your Assistant.

Instead, say "Ok Google" to start your request.
From the Google Home app
  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi as your Google Home device.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. In the top right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices Devices to see your available Google Home devices. 
  4. Scroll to find the device card for the Google Home.
  5. On the device card, you will see the newscast and title that is currently playing.
  6. You can stop, pause, resume, and adjust the volume of the newscast from the device card—the same way you control your music.

Set your default news services on Google Home

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name.
  4. Tap More settings and then News .
  5. You’ll see a list of news sources that will play when you say “Ok Google, listen to news."

To change the order of the list,

  1. Tap Change order and then hold the hashmark next to the news source. Drag the news source up or down.

To customize this list,

  1. To add a news source, tap Add news sources and then tap the check mark next to the sources you want to add.
  2. To remove a news source, tap the X next to the source you want to remove.
  1. Tap the down arrow next to the name of the current Google account which is logged in.
    1. If the account you want to link is listed in the drop-down menu, select it.
    2. If you need to link a brand new Google account, then proceed to next step.  
  2. Tap Manage accounts and then Add account.

Troubleshooting

If you're not hearing the news you expect,

  1. Make sure you've chosen your default news services.
  2. Be more specific with your request.
