How your existing storage works with Google One

You'll get storage through your Google One membership, which will become your new storage limit. You'll no longer buy storage through Google Drive. See if Google One is available for your account, and how much it costs.

Your Google One membership will replace your current plan, not add to it.

If you got storage as part of a promotion, you'll keep the extra storage.

Example upgrade from free storage to Google One

Before Google One:

65 GB of total storage

  • 15 GB default storage
  • 50 GB promotional storage from Safer Internet Day 2016

After upgrade to 100 GB Google One membership:

150 GB of total storage

  • 15 GB default storage
  • 85 GB storage from Google One membership
  • 50 GB promotional storage from Safer Internet Day 2016
Example upgrade from paid Drive storage to Google One

Before Google One:

150 GB of total storage

  • 100 GB paid Drive storage
  • 50 GB promotional storage from Safer Internet Day 2016

After upgrade to 200 GB Google One membership:

250 GB of total storage

  • 15 GB default storage
  • 185 GB storage from Google One membership
  • 50 GB promotional storage from Safer Internet Day 2016

Storage is shared with your family

You can choose to share your storage with everyone in your family on Google.

  • Each person gets 15 GB of default storage space.
    • Default storage is reserved for each person.
    • Your files will count against your default storage before counting against the available shared storage.
  • Family members can use as much of the available shared storage as they want.

Before Google One:

15 GB default storage for each person

After upgrade to 100 GB Google One membership:

100 GB storage available to each person

  • 15 GB default storage, reserved for each person
  • 85 GB storage from Google One membership, shared by 3 family members

What uses storage space

Not all files count against your storage. If you're running low, learn how to clear storage space.

These items take up space
  • Google Drive:
    • Most files in your "My Drive," including PDFs, images, videos.
    • Items in your Trash. Learn how to empty your trash.
    • Note: Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, and Sites don't take up storage space.
  • Gmail: Messages and attachments, including items in your Spam and Trash folders.
  • Google Photos: Photos and videos stored using the "Original" size.

Remove hidden data from apps in Google Drive

  1. Go to drive.google.com.
  2. Click Settings Settings and then Settings.
  3. On the left, click Manage Apps.
  4. If there's hidden data, see the amount under the app's description.
  5. To delete this data, click Options and then Delete hidden app data.
These items don't take up space
  • Google Drive:
    • ​Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Sites, and files in "Shared with me."
    • Files only take up space in the owner's Google Drive.
  • Google Photos: Photos and videos stored using the "High Quality" size. Learn how to use "High Quality" size.
