Using the AWS Import/Export Snowball Management Console

All Snowball jobs are performed by an IAM authorized user through the Snowball client, and are managed from the AWS Import/Export Snowball Management Console.

Getting the Status of Your Jobs

Each job has a status, which denotes the current state of the job. Possible Snowball import job status is as follows.

Job StatusDescription
Job createdYour job has just been created. This status is the only one during which you can cancel a job.
ProcessingAWS is processing your import job and is preparing a Snowball for shipping.
In transit to youThe Snowball has been shipped to the address you provided during job creation.
Delivered to youThe Snowball has arrived at the address you provided during job creation.
In transit to AWSYou have shipped the Snowball back to AWS.
At AWSYour shipment has arrived at AWS. Your import typically begins within a day of its arrival.
ImportingAWS is importing your data into Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3).
CompletedYour Snowball import job into Amazon S3 has completed successfully.
CanceledYour job has been canceled. You can only cancel Snowball import jobs during the Job created status. If you need to cancel the job after that point, email the Snowball support team.

Cloning a Job

When you first create a job, you might discover that you need more than one Snowball. Because each Snowball is associated with a single job, requiring more than one Snowball means that you need to create more than one job. When creating additional jobs, you can go through the job creation wizard again, or you can clone an existing job.

Cloning a job means recreating it exactly, except for an automatically modified name. Cloning is a simple process.

To clone a job

  1. In the AWS Import/Export Snowball Management Console, choose your job from the table.

  2. For Actions, choose Clone job.

  3. The Create job wizard opens to the last page, Step 6: Review.

  4. Review the information and make any changes you want by choosing the appropriate Edit button.

  5. To create your cloned job, choose Create job.

Cloned jobs are named in the format Job Name-clone-number. The number is automatically appended and represents the number of times you've cloned this job after the first time you clone it. For example, AprilFinanceReports-clone represents the first cloned job of AprilFinanceReports job, and DataCenterMigration-clone-42 represents the forty-second clone of the DataCenterMigration job.

Getting a Job Completion Report

After a job is finished, a completion report for that job is generated. This completion report is a downloadable PDF file. The job completion report provides you with the results of your data import job into Amazon S3. The report is available from the AWS Import/Export Snowball Management Console.

To get your job completion report

  1. Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the AWS Import/Export Snowball Management Console at AWS Import/Export Snowball Management Console.

  2. Search for and select your completed job from the table.

  3. Choose View a report of your completed job.

  4. Your job completion report PDF file opens in a new Internet browser tab or is saved to your computer, depending on your browser settings.

The job completion report looks like the following.

The report includes your job details, so you can associate it with a specific job for your records. The report also includes the job's completion status, transfer details, a resource list, and the path to your data import log. The resource list tells you which destination buckets now hold your imported data. The transfer details for your job are presented in a table that provides you with a high-level view of the total number of objects and bytes imported from the Snowball into Amazon S3.

A job's completion status is your at-a-glance insight into the final state of your data transfer. The following list describes the possible values for job completion status.

  • Canceled – The job was canceled before it was processed. For more information, see Canceling Jobs.

  • Completed – The job was completed, and your data has been transferred into Amazon S3.

  • Done with errors – Some of your data failed to be imported into Amazon S3. If such a failure happens, you can get more information from the log in your Amazon S3 bucket.
