Continuing Education - Greensboro Builders Association

North Carolina General Contractors are required to complete 8 hours of continuing education annually for license renewal. There is a 2-hour mandatory course along with 6 hours of electives required each year.

As an approved NC Licensing Board for General Contractors (NCLBGC) education provider, the Greensboro Builders Association offers CE courses throughout the year with discounted pricing for GBA members.

You have the option to register for a full day (8 hours) or select different dates for morning and/or afternoon sessions. We offer a variety of topics for the electives, including several NC Builder Institute (NCBI) courses, which can apply toward Accredited Builder or Accredited Master Builder designations. Courses are offered virtually via Zoom unless otherwise noted. Courses dates include:

September 17, 2026 Instructor: Steve Knight

8:00 AM – 10:00 AM ( 2 hrs ) 2026 Mandatory Course: Required for 2027 Renewal

The required two-hour mandatory course covers statutes and regulations for which qualifiers and licensees must comply. Students will review current law, regulations, rules and statutory terminology used by the NCLBGC. This course satisfies the two-hour 2026 NCLBGC mandatory course requirement for 2027 license renewal.

10:15 AM – 12:15 PM ( 2 hrs ) The ABC’s of Building Quality Concrete Floors & Driveways

During this course we will discuss how to build quality concrete slabs and driveways, including basic design principles and practical repair methodologies. This course will provide you with basic knowledge to construct durable concrete slabs on ground and to understand and/or prevent problems associated with one of the most costly problems experienced in residential construction; this is a great opportunity to improve the quality of your homes by learning the ABC’s.

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM ( 2 hrs ) Residential Floors

This course covers the floor design requirements found in the current North Carolina Residential Building Code. Floor joists and girder/beam design, support, bracing, drilling and notching are thoroughly discussed. Loading requirements and load calculating procedures to meet code are reviewed. Wood floor trusses and the NC Residential Code Appendix M for Wood Decks will also be discussed. Attendees will have an opportunity to work through a simple house plan to determine the location and size of the floor joists and girders required.

3:15 PM – 5:15 PM ( 2 hrs ) Residential Foundations

This course covers the foundation design requirements found in the current North Carolina Residential Building Code. Footing, foundation wall and retaining wall loading and design requirements and load calculating procedures are discussed. Attendees will have an opportunity to work through a simple house plan to determine the location and size of the footings and foundation walls required by code.

10:15 AM – 12:15 PM ( 2 hrs ) The Labor Force of America & Its Impact on Housing

This course covers the economic impact on housing and showcases how regulatory hurdles and labor can have a drastic effect. In today’s market, a limited supply of land, a shortage of skilled labor, and rising fees are all contributing factors to the price of housing. This course examines the 26 different trades that have to touch a job site from start to finish and what challenges they face to survive…with a unique focus on exactly where our workforce comes from and its overall makeup. We examine the country’s immigration policies and also explore critical educational pathways that exist to help expose more of the younger generation to the construction industry.

1:00 PM – 5:00 PM ( 4 hrs ) Land Use & Construction – Why It Matters to Pay Attention

This course is designed to showcase the many similarities between land use and construction and why it matters to pay attention to both when constructing a new structure. Many contractors start a new build with the tried-and-true requirements of the NC Building Code. In this course, we take a different approach and study the mechanics of zoning first to make sure your project gets off to a good start. Upon completion of this course, students will have a better understanding of a Zoning Ordinance, specifically the dimensional requirements, as well as the overall mechanics of a zoning ordinance and how it relates to the construction of a structure.

10:15 AM – 12:15 PM ( 2 hrs ) Common Contracting Mistakes Caused by Poor Communication

This course will help students to better understand the need to, and how to communicate with trade partners, suppliers and the client. There will be applied learning in “mirroring” listening techniques to help the student learn how to communicate clearly with another party. What is learned will then be applied in case study format.

Maximizing profits begin in the field. Learn how to implement field management tools to complete projects on time in budget with zero-defects.

10:15 AM – 12:15 PM ( 2 hrs ) Foundation Waterpoofing Methodology

It only takes living in a home with a leaky foundation to understand the importance of waterproofing. From structural and personal contents damage to mold and mildew infiltration, water can turn from being your biggest asset to your biggest liability in a flash. This course is designed to explore the difference between damp proofing and waterproofing, the different types of waterproofing systems, how the applications are applied, and what might be the most appropriate application for your project.

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM ( 2 hrs ) Construction Risks – Understand the Impacts of Claims

Managing risk on the construction site can have a positive impact on the company’s bottom line. The company can benefit from implementation of risk reduction strategies. Through this course participants will review the impact of claims. Discussion will include risk reductions strategies and the benefits of each.

3:15 PM – 5:15 PM ( 2 hrs ) Construction Risks – Identify the Hazards

Construction site hazards can directly impact workers safety and indirectly the company’s bottom line. The first step in controlling a hazard is to identify it. Through this course participants will identify common safety hazards. Discussion will include impacts for each, to workers and the project.

10:15 AM – 12:15 PM ( 2 hrs ) Marketing: Creating an Outstanding Company in a Traditional Industry

Have you ever thought, “Wow, that was a great idea, why didn’t I think of that?” Well, we are going to discuss some unique ideas on how to market you and your business. We are going to look at out-of-the-box ideas that may actually be right in front of us. We want to focus on being the outstanding company in an otherwise ordinary industry.

1:00 PM – 5:00 PM ( 4 hrs ) Framing Member Sizing

This course covers the load estimating procedures for the purposes of sizing any framing member within a residential building as required to meet the requirements found in the current North Carolina Residential Building Code. It starts out by reviewing the procedures outlined in the code’s Appendix W – Load Estimating. Then, the framing plans of an actual simple two-story house will be used to select all framing members required to satisfy the code requirements for the roof, ceiling, floors, walls, headers, girders, and, finally, the foundations and footings. The span tables in the code will be used to make those selections. The attendees that will find this class most useful are those who perform the tasks of project price estimating and those who develop construction drawings. In addition, framers who must size and select their own framing members will also benefit greatly from this course.

NCLBGC Requirements: This class requires an identification check; registrants to present a picture ID (valid state or federal ID preferred) at check-in. Registrants are required to be present for the entire duration of the course to receive NCLBGC Continuing Education Credit.

Cancellation Policy: If you need to change a course date, you can be reassigned to another date with no penalty. Must submit cancellation at least 10 business days prior to the course for a full refund, minus credit card fee (if applicable).
