Earlier this year, Mastercard and All Tech Is Human ran a workshop session where we invited the NYC #techandsociety community to join us in discussion around one of the older unsolved problems in #responsibleai. If you build a model and give it to someone else, how do you enable the other party to determine whether the model is sufficient for its intended use? This is one of the highest-ROI opportunities in commercial AI Governance. Business sees deals stall or die on the table every day when the buyer can't reach trust. If you're offering AI and you can't establish trust, your customer will go to a competitor, in-house, or stick with the status quo. The issue is that establishing AI trust is difficult - both methodologies and procedures are complex, and you need skilled people (of whom there are a limited supply). We did a whole stack of enabling work, including standardizing model documentation formats across the company and then producing documentation generation tooling (shout out to our Singapore partner teams under Wan Ting Poh here). This is all great. But better quality documents are a optimisation of yesterday's paradigm. Post-delivery support still falls too often onto data scientists. Documents as an interface are still limited for governance work. We feel more can still be done. So we brought this to the community, in the best way we knew how - partnership with David Ryan Polgar and his team. The community responded generously - and patiently (like us, they're aware that #aitransparency challenges aren't exactly new). We talked constructively about what this work required, and staked out the opportunity's structure. Then the capable Leah Ferentinos, with support from Emma Hatheway, Sherine Kazim and Alayna Kennedy wrote it all down in a white paper for you to read. You'll find it linked in the comment section. Alayna, David and the ATIH team put in incredible work. I greatly enjoyed listening to R. Jesse McWaters's keynote, Cansu Canca, Ph.D.'s fireside chat, lightning talks from the impressive Borhane Blili-Hamelin, PhD, Madison Mohns, and Sahiba Chopra - and my favourite moment, the insightful, witty panel from Molly Donovan, Emily Black, Felecia Webb and Elizabeth Anne Watkins, PhD. I hope you enjoy this new paper. Don't expect this to be our last word on this topic - there's plenty more to do if we want to create a reliable path to inter-party AI trust.
