Congratulations to Asyad Shipping on the delivery of the ABS-classed VLCC BIDBID. With a capacity of up to 2 million barrels of crude oil, BIDBID is one of the world’s largest crude carriers. The vessel features advanced exhaust gas cleaning systems, carbon emission reduction technologies, and enhanced energy-efficiency measures, reflecting Asyad Shipping’s commitment to sustainable and innovative maritime operations. BIDBID is one of four new VLCCs joining the company’s expanding fleet. Most nuclear safety frameworks were built for land. ABS is building one for the sea. As the industry moves from concept to concrete deployment, the safety models must move with it. At the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑜𝑛 𝑇𝑜𝑝𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝐼𝑠𝑠𝑢𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑁𝑢𝑐𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝐼𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑆𝑎𝑓𝑒𝑡𝑦, Mayir M., ABS Principal Engineer of Technology, presented on how ABS is developing the safety methodology the industry needs to get there. A crucial starting point is identifying the hazards that are unique to operating a reactor at sea: collisions, groundings and onboard fires. By applying a risk-informed, performance-based framework utilizing probabilistic risk assessment (PRA), we can help understand what the reactor and its safety systems must withstand directly, versus what maritime engineering (structural ruggedness, operational changes) can absorb. That clarity is what will help get this technology operational.
