Recent events at the shop! We celebrated the new mosaic in downtown Whitesburg Wednesday afternoon, with a new Appalshop film to boot! Visit our YouTube page and watch "Stream of Stories: Mosaic of Memories" by Mimi Pickering and Teresa Collins to learn all about the mosaic and the wonderful artists behind it. The event hosted by Cowan Community Center featured a live musical performance, drum circle, screening, and gallery viewing. The shop has also had a round of guests recently! Thank you to the groups who stopped by this week to learn more about what we do and what we're all about. A special shoutout to the Appalachian Immersion First Baptist Church of Middlesboro and some great folks from Berea College! ❤️

This Saturday join us in downtown Whitesburg, KY for the 2026 AMI Summer Documentary Lab Screening! This years documentary topics include kudzu, pro-wrestling in eastern Kentucky, and what you can learn about being Appalachian just from sharing a recipe. We will also feature community profiles of local business and people and a new documentary from a fourth year AMI student, Deladis Haywood, about their journey to carry on the torch of the Humans of Central Appalachia project started by local photographer legend Malcolm J. Wilson. Light refreshments will be provided! Doors open at 6pm and screening will begin at 7pm. This event is free and open to the public!

See the story of a mosaic in Whitesburg, Kentucky that also acts as a community archive. Commissioned by the Cowan Community Center, artists Lacy Hale and Julian Holt have worked tirelessly to complete the mosaic project, which commemorates the 2022 flood that devastated parts of southeast Kentucky. Today we celebrate the hire anniversary of Tommy Anderson, Appalachian Media Institute Program Manager! When they're not working, they love playing instruments, gardening, and being in nature, and their favorite Appalshop films are "Cousin Rabbit" (AMI film) and "Long Journey Home." We're lucky to have them!

Yellow Creek, Kentucky documents the efforts of the Yellow Creek Concerned Citizens to stop a commercial tannery from dumping toxic wastes into the creek that flows through their small community near Middlesboro, Kentucky. The program begins with residents describing a series of health problems in the community, moves to the process of unravelling the ties between local government and industry, and ends with a victorious election in which a bipartisan slate of concerned citizens take over the Middlesboro City Council. He traveled the world recording folk music, launching the careers Lead Belly, Muddy Waters & Robert Johnson, among others. He collaborated with Zora Neale Hurston & Sister Rosetta Thorpe, earning the nickname "Human Tape Recorder." Rest easy Alan. Your work lives on.
