Behavioral health integration can make care more accessible by bringing mental health support into primary care settings. For Week 8 of 25 Weeks of Gratitude, Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield is highlighting the Blue & You Foundation’s support of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Social Work Behavioral Health Integration Program. The program places Master of Social Work students in primary care clinics, where they join interdisciplinary teams supporting patients with behavioral health needs, chronic conditions and social factors that affect well-being. For Curtis Harris Jr. PLMSW, the work is deeply personal. After growing up in Michigan’s foster care system and aging out with little support, Curtis is now using his lived experience and clinical training to help others feel seen, supported and connected to care. Since the program began in fall 2021: • 20 students have completed the program • 5 have been hired as behavioral health consultants by their internship sites or similar clinics • The program is expanding from 5 students to 8 beginning in August • A new focus on maternal health, including rural maternal health, is being added Curtis’ story shows how investing in social work education can strengthen behavioral health care, support primary care teams and create new pathways for Arkansans to receive help. Quick gut check: do you know your A1C number? 🩸 Your A1C is a 3-month average of your blood sugar — not just a single snapshot. Sugar in your blood sticks to your red blood cells for about 3 months, so A1C shows the real pattern, not just one moment. Below 5.7% — Normal 5.7–6.4% — Pre-diabetes 6.5%+ — Diabetes And remember that soda math from earlier this week? This is exactly where it shows up. Know your number, know your risk — ask your doctor about an A1C test at your next visit. #KnowYourNumbers #TakeGoodCareArkansas

Preventive health isn’t always complicated. Sometimes it’s a single number: SPF 30. Applied daily, it filters roughly 97% of UVB rays, a small, repeatable habit with a long-term payoff for skin health. A simple one to pass along to your team as summer ramps up. #KnowYourNumbers #TakeGoodCareArkansas

This week’s 25 Weeks of Gratitude story highlights Hannah Gorman, a K–2 school counselor at eStem Public Charter Schools, and the impact of the Arkansas Trauma Resource Initiative for Schools, known as TRIS. When Hannah stepped into her role in 2020, students were navigating pandemic disruptions, families were under stress and young children were trying to express emotions they did not yet have the words to explain. Through TRIS, educators received training and tools to better recognize how trauma can show up in the classroom. For teachers, that shift helped create space to pause, respond with calm and look beneath the behavior to understand what a student may need. One story that stayed with me was about a kindergarten student who would become so overwhelmed he would cry until he got physically sick. With trauma-informed support, his teacher adjusted her approach, created a quiet space for him to reset and helped those moments become less frequent. That kind of change may seem small from the outside, but in a classroom it can be meaningful. A teacher has a new tool. A student has a safer way to calm down. A counselor has more support in helping the school respond with care instead of escalation. Over time, those moments help build a culture where students feel understood, educators feel equipped and families feel supported. Thanks to TRIS, more than 14,000 educators and 209 schools have received support across Arkansas. The Blue & You Foundation is grateful to support work that helps schools meet students with understanding, compassion and practical tools when they need it most. For the educators, counselors and school staff in my network: what is one small practice you have seen make a big difference for students? Read Hannah’s full story in the comments.

The sun’s UV rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the simplest window to remember for protecting your skin this summer. It’s an easy reminder to pass along to your family, your team, or anyone heading outside as the season peaks: • Seek shade during peak hours (10–4) • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ and reapply every two hours • Add a hat and sunglasses • Use the shadow rule — if your shadow is shorter than you are, UV is at its strongest Small, repeatable habits like these are what preventive health looks like day to day. #KnowYourNumbers #TakeGoodCareArkansas
