Millions of patients are affected by drug recalls every year, often after unsafe medicines have already reached homes, hospitals, and pharmacy shelves. ARPA-H is launching FASTPASS, a program to screen pharmaceutical shipments in minutes, through their packaging, before a single dose reaches a patient. No field-ready tool like this exists today. ARPA-H is taking on that gap. At ports, warehouses, and distribution centers, FASTPASS could help inspectors and quality teams verify safety faster without opening every box or waiting on slow lab testing. UCLA is proud to be part of AEGIS (Affordable Gene Editing Therapies for Immune System Diseases of Children), a new $27.7M Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) THRIVE-funded collaboration to develop affordable, personalized gene-editing therapies for children with inborn errors of immunity (IEI). Today, only two of 500 known IEIs have approved genetic therapies, each costing over $1M per child — this team aims to bring that down to below $200,000 and the time to develop the personalized editor to below three months. Massachusetts General Hospital has received an award to scale genome editing for rare genetic vascular diseases. Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) has given Mass General an award, up to $25.8 million, granted as part of the Treating Hereditary Rare Diseases with In Vivo Precision Genetic Medicine (THRIVE) program. This will provide up to five years of funding to execute the Vascular mEdicineS using Scalable Editing pLatform (VESSEL) program. The VESSEL team focuses specifically on researching rare genetic vasculopathies, a subset of vascular disease that cause stroke, aneurysms, and heart attacks in children. Although each individual disease is rare, more than 10,000 rare diseases exist that together affect more than 30 million Americans. Currently, there are no FDA-approved disease-modifying therapies to address the underlying genetic causes. Led by Patricia Musolino, MD, PhD, the VESSEL team includes researchers from Mass General Brigham’s Gene and Cell Therapy Institute, Center for Genomic Medicine, Neuroscience Institute, and Heart & Vascular Institute. Tackling some of the hardest problems in human health, with a narrow window to solve them, and the chance to build programs that could change the trajectory of medicine. These are not administrative roles. Program Managers are the engine of ARPA-H. They identify the problems others have stopped trying to solve, they build a strong technical roadmap, they assemble the right teams, and they drive high-risk, high-reward work toward impact for patients. You may be the right fit if you think from first principles, move across disciplines, challenge assumptions, and believe the best science should become better medicine much faster than it does today. The work is hard. The stakes are human. The opportunity is rare. Candidates who need a predictable lane, a long runway, or permission to think bigger need not apply.
