✈️ This week's Materials Minute is for anyone who has ever wondered what advancements have led to modern airplanes. In this clip from a TSS Open Mic Webinar, Marcel Van Wonderen, a retired engineer from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, delivers a powerful line: without thermal spray coatings, an airplane can't fly anymore. These coatings have become so embedded in aerospace engineering that they don't just maintain parts, they've fundamentally changed how parts are designed. And according to Marcel, there's no replacing them. The only option is to keep advancing them further. #ASMMaterialsMinute #ThermalSpray #TSS #Aerospace #Aviation #Coatings #MaterialsScience #Engineering

This week, ASM's Board of Trustees gathered at ASM headquarters, the iconic Dome, for their annual visit. For ASM staff, it was a chance to share a meal, swap stories, and connect in person with the leaders shaping where ASM is headed. We were especially glad to spend time with Daniel Dennies, who will step into the role of ASM President following current President Elizabeth Hoffman. Getting to welcome him, hear his perspective, and share a conversation over lunch was a reminder of just how grounded and people-first ASM's leadership truly is. The future of this society is in great hands. Here's to what comes next! #ASMInternational #BoardOfTrustees #Leadership #MaterialsScience #ASMmembership

ASM Member Spotlight: Sarah T. Sarah Tucker is an aerospace engineering professional who repairs advanced aircraft components, including next-generation starters. A 2023 graduate of Auburn University, she enjoys combining hands-on engineering with repair design to improve aircraft reliability. Through ASM International, Sarah is expanding her knowledge of metallurgy and materials through educational courses and technical resources as she continues to grow her career in aerospace engineering. “I work with a lot of different metals (Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Inconel, etc.), and this isn't something you learn in the university classroom. A lot of what I've learned is either on the job or through ASM resources.” Connect with Sarah on the ASM member platform: https://lnkd.in/gYfjjwik #ASMmember #MemberSpotlight #TechnicalAssociation #Membership #MaterialsScience #engineering

This week's Materials Minute opens with a story of a six-year-old boy launching his first rocket and ends with a reminder of why a moment like that matters. In this clip from an EDFAS webinar, "From Military Hardware to Microchips: One Engineer's Near 50-Year Career Arc", our speaker, Steven Herschbein, recalls how Former President Kennedy's announcement of the Space Program and that first launch lit a fire in him that never went out. Nearly 50 years of engineering later, he now visits middle and high schools, bringing that same spark to the next generation. And with the Artemis II launch reigniting public excitement around space exploration, he's seeing something he hasn't seen in a while: a resurgence of interest in technology and engineering. Some stories come full circle in the best way. ASM's community is full of members with the passion for STEM. They share this passion with future generations and enrich our member community with their experience.
