The groundbreaking Shimmick Construction 301 Mission Perimeter Pile Upgrade project helped stabilize San Francisco's iconic Millennium Tower through precision engineering, deep foundation retrofits, and exceptional collaboration, showcasing the ingenuity and technical expertise that define California's construction industry. To make it possible, crews installed 18 deep foundation piles drilled approximately 300 feet to bedrock and carefully transferred the building's weight onto a new support system, all while working within an incredibly tight urban footprint. The project was awarded the 2026 AGC of California Constructor Award in the Heavy Civil $50 Million to $100 Million category. Operating Engineers are the heavy‑equipment drivers who power California’s biggest builds. They run the excavators, bulldozers, cranes, and compactors that shape roads, bridges, tunnels, and skylines. They operate the machines that move earth, lift materials, and keep major projects on schedule. They work everywhere: underground, on water, in tight urban corridors, and sometimes hundreds of feet in the air. Balfour Beatty US Caltrain Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project earned the 2026 AGC of California Constructor Award for Excellence in Partnering, recognizing the collaboration behind one of North America’s most ambitious rail transformations. This $2.4B design build effort electrified the 160‑year‑old, 52‑mile corridor from San Francisco to San Jose, delivering North America’s first transition from diesel to electrified passenger rail. Crews integrated a 25kV AC Overhead Catenary System, built 10 traction power facilities, and used the only contractor‑operated wire train in the United States to install OCS wire at record speed, 5,800 feet in a single day, all while keeping service running for 65,000 daily commuters. Working within a narrow live track corridor and navigating all four of OSHA’s Fatal Four hazards, the team coordinated across 21 jurisdictions, introduced new partnering innovations, avoided a 12‑month delay, saved more than $36M, and delivered the project without a single claim. This project stands as a landmark achievement in safety, innovation, and collaboration, and a model for how major infrastructure gets built.
