Our team recently came together to visit a client site at a major cheese production facility. The system on-site handles large volumes of high-strength dairy effluent. Despite their high BOD levels and strict phosphorous discharge limits, they are now capable of treating their wastewater to surface discharge quality while capturing the produced biogas as a renewable fuel source. The World Cup has historically been a test for the host nation's infrastructure, and this year is no different. Across North America, water infrastructure has stolen the spotlight, highlighting the intersection of water scarcity, aging treatment systems, and extreme heat. However, amid these challenges we've seen a number of innovative projects and movements seeking to offset the impacts of the tournament on water supplies, especially those in resource-strained regions. Today, we're highlighting some of these innovative practices that are protecting communities' water supplies from the impacts of short-term population surges while building long-term resilience.

Industrial facilities reliant on public utilities are approaching an inflection point. The American Water Works Association 2026 State of the Water Industry report notes that confidence in public water utilities has fallen to an 8-year low, citing rapidly rising costs and aging infrastructure as ongoing hurdles for a chronically under-funded industry. The report also finds that less than half of utilities can currently cover their operational costs, driving many to raise rates in the short-term. These trends are creating concern for industrial facilities who often see rate hikes, new surcharges, or even withdrawal limits as their utility tries to offset long-term funding issues. Now, industrial facilities are reassessing their tolerance for risk and variability as well as how best to secure their operations in the long-term.
