On July 13, 2026, on his 90th birthday, Art Ulene became the oldest person to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro, the world's tallest freestanding mountain. This amazing accomplishment, however, comes from a lifetime of striving to age well and live up to his potential. On this episode of There for Care, host Amy Rein invites Art, a retired doctor and former Today Show medical correspondent, to share some of his many adventures, his preparation routine for the climb, and advice for other older adults who want to age with more confidence. HE DID IT! Dr. Art Ulene celebrated his 90th birthday at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro today, making him the oldest person to ever summit. After months of preparation and 13 days on the climb, he blew out the candles on a special cake his guides baked for him (at 18,000 feet!) after watching the sun rise from above the clouds. We're inspired by seeing Art complete this amazing achievement, and we wish him a safe trek back down. We'll share photos from his adventure soon!

Art is currently at 12,700 feet and making his way up Mount Kilimanjaro, one step at a time. Every step doesn't just bring him closer to the top, it challenges how we think about aging, purpose, and living up to our potential. We at CareScout feel lucky that our work to redefine the aging experience allows us to connect with and support inspiring individuals like Art. Keep climbing, Art, you've got this!

If you're juggling care for your kids alongside care for your aging parents: welcome to the sandwich generation. July is National Sandwich Caregivers Month, recognizing the millions of Americans who are "sandwiched" between two generations, and caring for both. Many of them are also employed full-time, while others have had to leave full-time employment to be able to provide care. There's no magic solution to the difficulties sandwich caregivers face, but there are ways employers can better support those who are working and providing care. In this episode of SHRM's HonestHR podcast, Caregiver Action Network CEO Marvell Adams Jr. shares the realities of the sandwich generation and how HR can better support those trying to do it all. https://lnkd.in/e4tJDEc4

LGBTQ+ older adults are entering a long-term care system they may not fully trust. After decades of building and protecting their identities, they rightfully ask, "Will care providers respect and understand the life I've lived and the people I love?" Laura Piwinski, Head of Strategy at CareScout, shared her thoughts with McKnight's Senior Living about the unique considerations LGBTQ+ adults face in long-term care decisions, and the trust that needs to be built to support this community. Art Ulene has worn many hats in his career: esteemed doctor, medical correspondent on the TODAY show, dad, grandfather, retired adventurer. Today, he starts his next chapter as a healthy aging advocate as he begins his journey to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro at age 89. If he summits on July 13 (his 90th birthday) he'll become the oldest person to have ever done it, breaking a record and redefining what's possible in aging if you're willing to take that first step.
