Without a clear focus on business outcomes, AI, Data Governance and Catalog programs are dead on arrival. I had the honor of opening the CDO Masterclass keynote with our partner BlueYeti at Capital Factory in Austin, kicking off an incredible conversation about data strategy and impact. Speaking with leaders, one of the questions I constantly ask is: “Is your data strategy truly aligned with business outcomes?” During the “Value Shift” segment, we explored why traditional approaches to data management, focusing solely on documentation or visibility, are no longer enough. Today, the mission is to demonstrate clear business value from your data initiatives. Key insights from the discussion: 🎓 C-Suite leaders need data and AI to actively drive strategic outcomes—whether it’s reducing claims in Insurance or increasing student enrollment in Higher Education. 🎓 Business line leaders need usable, actionable data. Data leaders play a pivotal role in enabling this. 🎓 The hardest challenge? Translating data issues, like quality gaps, into meaningful business outcomes. Data relevance emerges only when tied to tangible results. 🎓 Every data initiative must connect to the bigger business picture to drive measurable impact. As we look toward 2026, the question remains: how will your data strategy ensure real business outcomes? I’d love to hear your perspective, share your thoughts below!

Despite the winter storm in Austin, it was a great week. I enjoyed co-hosting the CDO Masterclass with the BlueYeti team at Capital Factory. The energy in the room was exceptional, with leaders passionately engaging with one another, networking, sharing real experiences, and driving meaningful discussion across both Team A and Team B breakout groups. Thank you to the BlueYeti team and to our speakers and moderators for the live roundtable discussions, including Jessica Zuñiga and Michael Kravec. Special thanks to Frederick DeWorken for the opening keynote, and to Simon McGraw and the extended events teams at BlueYeti for their excellent support. Key takeaways from the session. 🎓 Value first data governance: Governance must start with value and deliver clear benefits to data actors and the business. 🎓 Traditional governance falls short: Documenting data without data or AI outcomes is a warning sign. 🎓 Business engagement is non negotiable: Without early business involvement, data and AI initiatives are likely to fail. 🎓 Shared data ownership matters: Shared ownership builds accountability and avoids single points of failure. 🎓 Think like a product manager: Data and AI initiatives succeed when treated like products with clear stories, outcomes, and measurable value.

Thank you to everyone who joined today's DataGalaxy webinar via CDO Masterclass. We had over 200 people from around the world RSVP for the event. It is always a pleasure to speak with Joe Reis, who will be releasing his new book on data modeling soon. The core message of today’s discussion was straightforward. Traditional data management still matters. It may not be exciting, but for leaders who want to scale AI, strong data governance is essential. Governance creates guardrails so data is accessed by the right people and used in the right context. That said, data governance should not exist just to document data. That approach adds little value. The shift now is toward data product thinking. By 2026, most data leaders will be measured less by the tools they deploy and more by the business outcomes they deliver, whether internal or external. Thank you again to Joe Reis for a great conversation. The watch analogy was spot on. Do not explain how the watch is built when the real value is simply telling the time. Lastly, a big shoutout to Amin Mrabet and Laura Corbet Delabre at DataGalaxy for the backend support in organizing the event.

Many organizations cite AI ready data as their top investment focus for the next two to five years. Yet a large number still struggle with basic data management and even broader data literacy. While AI is advancing at unprecedented speed, the pressure on CDOs and data leaders continues to rise. Traditional data management is reemerging as a priority because leaders are realizing that true AI success depends on strong data foundations. AI excels at tagging, classification, and pattern recognition, which creates new opportunities to reinforce core data practices. In this session, Kash Mehdi, founder of CDO Masterclass and VP of Growth at DataGalaxy, joins Joe Reis, leading author and thought leader in data engineering. Together, they will have an unfiltered conversation on how organizations can evaluate and operationalize opportunities at the intersection of AI and traditional data management. Key Learning Objectives: 🎓 Why strong data fundamentals are essential for any meaningful AI initiative. 🎓 How AI capabilities like tagging and pattern detection can accelerate traditional data management. 🎓 Practical steps for CDOs and data leaders to assess maturity, close gaps, and build a sustainable AI ready data foundation.

Yesterday, Situl Shah and I had a live discussion on the DataGalaxy webinar, where we talked about the impact of data and AI governance on modern enterprises. The conversation was very interesting, and here are my top five highlights: 🎓 Leadership Foundation: Effective leadership in the data and AI space is built on direct, hands-on experience and a persistent focus on seeing challenging data projects through to success, even in difficult situations. 🎓 The New AI Wave: The current AI transformation in insurance differs from past shifts due to major technology changes (like Agentic AI and Edge computing) coinciding with increased regulatory complexities (e.g., DORA, SolvencyUK) and the need for large-scale Pensions transformation. 🎓 90-Day Priority for AI Leaders: Beyond buying tools, the first concrete move for a CDO or AI Leader should be to invest in people with good digital skills and update processes. This includes adopting scalable, cloud-native platforms designed with data sovereignty in mind. 🎓 Closing the AI Gap: Overcoming the "AI Gap" requires changes in company culture, addressing inherent resistance to change, and improving poor data quality and lack of skills. This also necessitates strong leadership from regulators and implementing business-centric updates to regulations. 🎓 Non-Negotiable Governance Guardrails: To achieve speed without losing trust, non-negotiable guardrails include creating and implementing a robust AI strategy and effective governance. These are central to digital trust, improving quality and controls, and enabling innovation for better business performance. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this insightful discussion and for the great questions.

This session examines the real impact of data and AI governance on how modern enterprises operate, compete, and innovate. Situl Shah will explain why strong governance is now a strategic capability rather than a technical task. He will outline how organizations can shift from scattered data practices to trusted, resilient ecosystems that enable responsible AI, faster decisions, and regulatory confidence. Drawing on hands-on experience from global programs, Situl will show what it takes to embed governance that drives value, protects the business, and prepares teams for an AI-powered future. Three key takeaways 🎓 A clear view of what effective data and AI governance looks like in practice and how it directly influences enterprise performance 🎓 How to build a trusted, secure, and AI-ready data ecosystem that balances innovation with risk and regulatory demands 🎓 Practical actions leaders can take to align data, AI, and security capabilities with business strategy and strengthen long-term organizational resilience

January is shaping up to be a full month with two industry expert talks and a CDO Masterclass in Austin for strategic data management leaders. Tomorrow, Situl Shah and I will be live for the first expert talk to discuss an important topic for data leaders. Situl brings over 20 years of experience in the data space and will join us live from London. The following day, I’ll be joined by Joe Reis for the second expert talk to cover another topic closely tied to data and AI. Next, Jessica Zuñiga from BlueYeti and I will co-host the in-person CDO Masterclass in Austin, ahead of our January closeout at Data Day Texas. My main goal this month is to share insights openly. I’m not a fan of gating information, let’s learn in public, build in public, and grow together.

I’m joining CDO Masterclass because of who is in the room. When Kash Mehdi and the team at #DataGalaxy host a discussion, they don’t just read slides. They facilitate the kind of honest, "off-the-record" dialogue that actually moves the needle for us as leaders. We have plenty of tools. We have plenty of data. What we are often missing is the quiet, strategic space to figure out how they fit into the reality of 2026. I’m going to listen to peers who are grappling with the same governance and leadership challenges I am. If you are a #DAMAAustin member or a data leader in town, this is where we go deep. See you there? Zaki T. Teju Sitaram, CDMP® Tracy Talbot Madelyn Russo #DAMAAustin #DataGovernance #DataLeadership #AustinTech #CDOMasterclass
