New requirements are now in effect for Department SBIR/STTR applicants, and they extend beyond the technology you're proposing. As of July 15, the Department's new Foreign Risk Evaluation Program introduces a more standardized review of foreign ownership, research partnerships, intellectual property, financial relationships, cybersecurity practices, and other affiliations that may impact award eligibility. The important takeaway? Having international collaborators or investors isn't automatically a problem. What matters is understanding those relationships, documenting them accurately, and ensuring your disclosures are complete and consistent. Every startup begins with a hypothesis. The challenge is remembering that it's exactly what it is: a hypothesis. As founders, it's easy to become attached to an idea. We spend so much time thinking about the solution that we can unintentionally start looking for evidence that supports it instead of evidence that challenges it. That's where market validation comes in. It's not about proving you're right. It's about uncovering what you don't know yet. The founders who make the greatest progress aren't always the ones with the best ideas. They're the ones willing to question their own assumptions and let the market shape what comes next.

Today's Arizona Aerospace Summit is a great reminder of Arizona's innovation economy and that it isn't growing in just one direction. The connectedness of the aerospace, semiconductor, advanced manufacturing, and defense AI is creating exciting new opportunities for startups. A strong ecosystem isn't built by a single industry, but by the connections among many.

One common misconception among early-stage founders is, ‘I’ll patent it after I publish my research.’ In reality, timing matters. Patent protection depends in part on novelty, and once an invention is publicly disclosed through a paper, conference talk, product demo, website post, or similar release, that disclosure can start the U.S. one-year grace period and may eliminate patent options in many other countries. This is especially important for university researchers, where publishing is encouraged but commercialization may require protecting intellectual property first. The key is not choosing between publication and patenting, but carefully coordinating the timing. If you’ve developed something with commercial potential, contact your university’s technology transfer office or a qualified patent professional before sharing technical details. Innovation is not just about creating something valuable; it is also about knowing when to share it. Filing before publishing can preserve opportunities that may be difficult or impossible to recover later.
