Half the reps hiding inside skyscraper SaaS orgs would be unemployed within 90 days if you stripped away brand recognition, inbound demos, and the warm blanket of enterprise procurement theatre. I’ve had this conversation with Series A founders more times than I can count. “The whole of downtown San Francisco is basically a Salesforce billboard. Selling that software takes about as much skill as selling Oreo ice cream on a crowded beach in July.” And honestly, maybe there’s nothing wrong with Oreo ice cream. It’s efficient. Familiar. Popular for a reason. But the pattern is always the same: founder-led sales velocity is positioned as infinitely more dangerous and sexy than a 5,000-person sales machine paralysed by layers of approvals, process maps, and “strategic alignment” meetings that generate nothing except calendar fatigue. Is it completely true? Not always. A lot of startup mythology is just people romanticising dysfunction because they haven’t yet figured out how to eliminate it. “We move fast” is often code for “everything is on fire.” And taking smug shots at Salesforce Tower can become its own form of status signalling. Still, there’s truth underneath it. Startup salespeople develop sharper instincts because comfort never existed. No giant logo to hide behind. No endless inbound pipeline. No army of Solution Consultants, RevOps analysts, and enablement managers cushioning every customer interaction. And in a downturn, reality hits hard. The AE who needs three Solution Consultants and a follow-up workshop to answer one customer question gets exposed quickly by the operator who can run discovery, handle technical objections, close the deal, and survive without a support cast. Corporate SaaS is a choice. Startup chaos is also a choice. Both paths produce killers. Both paths produce passengers. The difference is that one environment exposes weakness immediately, while the other can conceal it for years.

A lot of AEs are delusional about salary. Not because they want to be paid well. They should. But because a lot of people were taught a very simplistic version of negotiation by their parents and society: “Push for the highest number possible.” “Don’t leave money on the table.” That advice sounds empowering, but it can create a pretty bad bartering mindset. A job offer isn’t a market stall. You’re not trying to haggle your way into an extra few grand and then walk away feeling like you “won.” The real question is whether the company believes you are going to create a lot more value than you cost. And whether you believe the role gives you the conditions to actually do that. That’s where leverage comes from. Not from squeezing the absolute maximum out of the first conversation. Not from benchmarking yourself against the top 5% of earners while ignoring your own track record. Not by acting like every company that won’t meet your number is trying to exploit you. There’s a difference between knowing your worth and overpricing yourself. If you’ve consistently beaten quota, opened difficult markets, influenced how the team sells, helped improve messaging, won competitive deals, and made people around you better, you’ll have leverage. Maybe not with every company, but with the right ones. If you haven’t done those things yet, demanding the package of someone who has doesn’t make you ambitious. It makes you expensive before you’re proven. Negotiate properly. Don’t accept bad offers. Don’t let companies underpay you. But don’t confuse short-term extraction with long-term value creation.

Who deserves to get promoted from Midmarket to Enterprise AE? The answer is pretty simple... almost none of you. Most Midmarket reps being pushed into Enterprise are quota tourists riding favourable territory and inflated attainment. Enterprise sales exposes this almost immediately. Nobody cares that you can smile through a demo, fire out 10,000 emails a month, or close low-risk deals by manufacturing urgency around quarter-end pricing. It's true, behaviours celebrated in SMB and Midmarket often become deeply embarrassing in Enterprise. Because now you’re sitting across from people protecting political capital, operational stability, headcount, vendor risk, and multi-million-dollar accountability. And suddenly the rep who built their entire identity around hustle culture starts sounding like a child who drank three cold brews before a board meeting. The good news for SMB and Midmarket AEs... most Enterprise reps aren’t even better salespeople. A huge percentage are just calmer operators who look more at home in a shiny boardroom than they do crushing quota in their home office wearing fluffy socks. There is absolutely nothing inherently superior about being an Enterprise AE. Half the industry treats Enterprise like some sacred promotion path. In reality, a massive number of Enterprise reps are semi-average performers hiding behind a 14-month sales cycle and jargon. A killer Midmarket rep generating clean, repeatable revenue can be infinitely more valuable than an Enterprise AE cosplaying as McKinsey because they learned the phrase “executive alignment.” SaaS turned Enterprise into a status symbol, so now thousands of reps chase it for prestige instead of suitability to their own personality. And Enterprise has a uniquely cruel way of exposing people who confuse noise with intelligence. Just as with Midmarket, if you can't run a good CRM sequence or cold call... see you at the next recession. Forget the archetypes. Just pick where your strengths lie. Then sell... #Enterprise #SaaS #AI #Midmarket

My client is hiring a Midmarket Account Executive, ideally based on the East Coast, though strong candidates from across the US will be considered. You’ll need proven experience selling into Pharma or Manufacturing teams, ideally selling QMS, eQMS or EBR software at companies such as MasterControl, QT9 Software, Greenlight Guru or ETQ, by way of example. #USA #QMS #SaaS #Remote #Chicago #NewYork #Boston #NYC
