Environmental Sustainability Must Be Part of Global AI Governance On 8 July, GeSI CEO Luis Neves participated in the CODES Roundtable on Environmental Sustainability in Global AI Governance, hosted at the International Telecommunication Union in Geneva. The working roundtable brought together representatives from governments, international organisations, academia, civil society, the scientific community and the private sector to examine a critical question: is the environmental dimension receiving sufficient attention in global AI governance? The discussion highlighted the need to look beyond AI’s energy use and emissions alone. A credible approach to sustainable AI must consider the full lifecycle of the infrastructure underpinning AI systems—from resource-efficient data centres, models and networks to renewable energy, circularity and electronic waste—while also scaling AI applications that deliver measurable environmental and societal benefits. For GeSI, the message is clear: digital governance and sustainable development cannot advance on separate tracks. Building AI that serves people and the planet will require shared standards, practical implementation and collaboration across sectors and regions. Luís explores these questions further in his latest GeSI Viewpoint, “Sustainable AI for Sustainable Societies: The Missing Dimension in Global AI Governance.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/e5wy75b6 #SustainableAI #AIGovernance #DigitalSustainability #AIForGood #GeSI
