    Which system in your environment would be hardest to recover if it failed tomorrow? Most security programs have good visibility into their cloud platforms, endpoints, identity management systems, and email environments. But some of the most important business data may still be sitting on assets that get far less attention. It could be a departmental file server, a small Windows server supporting a finance process, or a legacy system that no one wants to touch because it still works. The asset itself may not be considered strategic, but the data residing on it often is. That distinction matters when the server fails, is encrypted, or is compromised as part of a larger incident. This is where organizations can run into trouble. Asset ownership may be unclear. The backup process put in place years ago has not been tested. None of that is obvious under normal operations. The gap becomes visible at the worst possible time, when the business is waiting, the incident team is under pressure, and leadership wants to know how quickly operations can resume. Attackers do not care whether a server is considered modern, legacy, temporary, or too small to worry about. They care whether disrupting it will hurt the business. For security teams, that means knowing where critical data lives, who is responsible for it, and whether backed-up data is trustworthy and can be recovered. These systems often escape scrutiny because nothing has gone wrong yet.     When a key employee leaves, most companies know how to shut down the account. The laptop comes back, access gets turned off, HR closes the file, and everyone moves on. The problem usually shows up a few weeks later, when someone needs the spreadsheet behind a forecast, the deck that explains a big decision, or the email thread where a customer issue was finally resolved. Suddenly, people are digging through old folders, asking around, or pulling IT into something that should have been a quick search. That’s the part of offboarding we don't often discuss. Companies are usually pretty good at access removal, but they’re not always as good at preserving the context behind the work. It’s not about a dramatic data loss event. It’s about ensuring productivity and business continuity, built on the back of intellectual property and corporate memory that you own. It's smarter and faster to build on something you've already bought and paid for than to start over and recreate. Offboarding should do two things simultaneously: 1. Ensure the former employee no longer has access. 2. Preserve corporate memory and integrate it into your knowledge assets. The way to do that is to close the account, archive the data in a searchable way, and give the right people a practical way to find and access what they need. Curious how other teams handle this.
