SAFETY SATURDAY — Confined Spaces: Know Before You Enter 🕳️ Confined spaces are some of the most dangerous areas on any site. Tanks, silos, pits, vaults, mixers, and enclosed structures can hide hazards you can’t see — low oxygen, toxic gases, engulfment, mechanical movement, and more. Before anyone enters, the space must be tested, prepared, and verified safe. Key reminders for confined space safety: • Never enter a confined space without proper authorization and a completed permit • Test the atmosphere for oxygen levels, toxic gases, and flammable vapors • Ventilate the space if readings are out of range — never “hope it clears” • Lockout/Tagout all equipment that could move, mix, or shift • Maintain communication with the attendant at all times • Have rescue procedures and equipment ready before entry — not after something goes wrong A confined space can turn deadly in seconds. The safest entry is the one that’s fully planned, tested, and controlled. 🚀 Meet the Manager: Connecting Leadership & Teamwork 🚀 Every other Sunday, Croell, Inc.'s "Meet the Manager" series recognizes individuals who keep operations running smoothly and foster a culture of teamwork and growth. Check out this week’s featured manager below! Manager’s Name: Katie Rasmussen Role at Croell: Quality Control Manager Division/Location: Wyoming Asphalt Paving Division 🏢Professional Background: I began my career in 2013. I received a phone call asking if I would like to do a job change. I took a chance and 2 weeks later I moved to Montana where I began testing. I enjoyed the traveling and what I was doing and was offered a fulltime position with that company. I had the opportunity to work a lot of different project types from FAA, FHWA, WYDOT, and even some Military contracts. Each job offered me an opportunity to continue learning more about the industry and the multiple sides of testing that take place behind the scenes. I slowly began stepping more into a leadership role, which slowly led to the manager position. As a manager, I enjoy getting to go to more of the work sites and seeing everyone. It has also been great to see how we have all grown as a crew, as well as a company. 💪Leadership and Work Style: I like to lead by example. There is not a thing I would ask one of my employees to do that I would not. On top of that I try to foster an environment where employees would feel comfortable sharing ideas. I am all about improving the testing program and moving forward. I try to be as transparent as possible, while keeping open communication with my employees. Most of all I value honesty, integrity, treating each other with respect. 🚒Fun and Personal: A fun fact about me, is that I received my college degree in graphic design. To this day, I do freelance work when I am not in our busy season. I enjoy sitting down with clients and making their visions come true on paper. It is a fun experience to collaborate with clients. I have designed websites all the way to helping someone design a logo for a business they are beginning. Outside of work I enjoy traveling and seeing my friends and family. It is always a good time to get together and spend time. 💭 Advice to Others: I began with Croell in 2020. They have grown in so many different ways, especially expanding the company. This has opened many doors for their employees. My advice - take the opportunities you are given and do not be afraid to ask the questions. SAFETY SATURDAY — SDS: What You Need to Know 📄 Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are more than paperwork — they’re your guide to understanding the hazards of the chemicals we use every day across plants, shops, ready‑mix, and construction sites. Knowing how to read an SDS helps you protect yourself, your crew, and the environment. Key reminders about SDS: • Every chemical on site must have an SDS available and accessible • Review the SDS before using any new chemical or product • Pay attention to sections on hazards, PPE, first aid, and safe handling • Follow storage and disposal instructions exactly as listed • Report missing or outdated SDS sheets so they can be corrected • When in doubt, stop and check — SDS exists to keep you safe Understanding the hazards is the first step to preventing them.
