DC Water has completed the first major step in emergency repairs to the Potomac Interceptor near Pennyfield Lock. 🙌 After inspections found serious wear and damage, crews installed a new concrete-like geopolymer lining inside the pipe to strengthen it. The before-and-after images show the results of that work. This milestone is part of ongoing repairs to 1,700 linear feet of sewer pipe near Pennyfield Lock. Repairing the pipe from the inside helps extend the life of critical infrastructure, minimizes disruption to nearby communities, and helps protect the Potomac River. 🏃♀️💧 Leadership takes many forms. By day, Kelly Fisher, Director and Associate General Counsel in DC Water’s Office of Government and Legal Affairs, helps navigate complex legal and government affairs matters. Over the past several weeks, Kelly has also volunteered as a certified running coach, leading a Women of Water 5K training program for DC Water employees and supporters. Their goal? The Bluemont 5K on July 22 at Bluemont Park in Arlington, Virginia, where participants will celebrate six weeks of training, teamwork and perseverance. The event will also feature a special appearance by Wendy the Water Drop and a free Kids Water Bucket Race. “Running is not just about physical fitness. It can be a great way to bring a community together. I’m so proud of our Women of Water, 5K trainees who have put in six weeks of hard work to better themselves and strengthen our DC Water community,” Kelly said. We are grateful for employees who strengthen our organization both inside and outside the workplace.

We talk about water every day. But what does water mean to the people we serve? To find out, we asked DC residents to finish one simple sentence: “Water is… 💧” Their responses were a reminder that water is about so much more than infrastructure. It’s health. It’s community. It’s peace of mind. It’s the everyday moments that often go unnoticed until they’re interrupted. Sometimes the best way to understand the impact of our work is to listen to the people who experience it every day.

Taking care of our employees means giving them the tools to take care of themselves. At DC Water, our annual Screening Day makes preventive care more accessible and convenient by bringing health resources directly to the workplace. This year’s event expanded beyond traditional preventive screenings to include 3D body scans, mobility assessments, hearing and vision screenings, and health coaching, offering employees additional tools to better understand their health. “Screening Day is about more than numbers and results. It’s about giving employees the opportunity to invest in their health and well-being. This year, we expanded the event beyond traditional preventive screenings to give employees a more complete picture of their overall health. I hope everyone walks away feeling empowered to take charge of their health and knowing that DC Water is committed to supporting them on that journey,” said Madison MacDougall, Senior Specialist, Benefits, People & Talent, who organized this year’s event. Turning long-term plans into lasting infrastructure. 🙌 Yesterday, we celebrated the groundbreaking of the Piney Branch Tunnel, the final tunnel segment of the Clean Rivers Project. Once complete, the 2,200-foot tunnel will capture and store 4.2 million gallons of combined sewer and stormwater during heavy rain. Instead of overflowing into Piney Branch, that water will be conveyed to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment. This work will help keep sewage and debris out of local waterways, making Rock Creek, the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay cleaner and healthier for the communities we serve.
