IEEE partnered with Data Conversion Laboratory (DCL) to develop the Publications Ethics Monitor (PEM) solution to proactively detect citation coercion by monitoring occurrences of citation manipulation during the peer review lifecycle of a manuscript. ScholarOne (from Silverchair) Notification Services alerts DCL when a manuscript enters the peer-review system, and the PEM process commences. DCL engineers developed sophisticated comparison algorithms to account for the significant variation between how author names are entered in an author block versus how they appear in citation text or databases. The complexities compound exponentially when you consider the massive volume of papers submitted as well as the 2 to 3 manuscript revision cycles that must be analyzed. Harmonizer
Content Analytics Tools
Harmonizer is a software application that analyzes document collections using natural language processing (NLP) to identify redundant content in the collection. Harmonizer examines content across a variety of source formats. HTML and Excel reports from Harmonizer help operationalize information and influence reuse strategy when moving to XML. Our customers find that Harmonizer reveals unintended differences in text phrasing, spelling, and punctuation—often finding errors that have been deeply embedded in documentation for many years.

Take a glimpse of Iceland through our latest company calendar photo! Although Jeremy Love, Project Manager at DCL, encountered "plenty of lush hills and epic waterfalls" in Iceland, he found this amazing lava field near the village of Grindavík, which had recently seen volcanic activity, especially thought-provoking because "I was struck by just how desolate it was, juxtaposed by a solitary man-made signpost demarcating the trail (it felt a little out of place)."
