This research report from the Learning Policy Institute explores four states’ implementation efforts of high-quality early education systems through analyzing key decisions, credentialing pathways, and shared program features. The report also shares common strategies to support greater access, such as providing financial support beyond tuition, offering more choice in course format (hybrid or online, evenings or weekends), and creating cohort-based models to build a community of practice for teacher candidates. Teacher apprenticeship programs are rethinking how prior classroom experience fits into the path to certification. The CEEDAR Center at the University of Florida’s interactive tool helps states and higher education institutions create a formal process for recognizing and granting credit for prior learning to apprentices entering Registered Teacher Apprenticeship Programs. After decades of slow but steady growth in teacher diversity, the share of teachers of color in the national teacher workforce plateaued at about 20% between 2018 and 2021. Using 13 years of data, a Learning Policy Institute report examines ways to support a racially diverse teacher workforce. The report found that teachers of color are more likely to enter through alternative preparation routes, take on more student loan debt, work in high-need schools, and have less access to mentoring and competitive compensation, with these factors contributing to higher stress and lower retention. To combat this, the report offers policy solutions that prioritize expanding access to high-quality educator preparation, improving school conditions by investing in school leadership and resources, increasing teacher compensation, and building strong mentoring and induction systems. While student-level data related to pandemic-learning differences has been accessible, teacher-focused data has largely been absent. This report from the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools helps address this gap by examining data from more than 285,000 teachers to reveal post-pandemic shifts in levels of experience, racial diversity, pathways to credentialing, and staffing in critical core subjects.
