Just a few months before Dolly's birth our Bio 123 (Energetics and Genetics) professor was saying we wouldn't see mammalian cloning in our lifetime--but she was already gestating. A year later, he'd be calling in favors to get copies of Wilmut et al. (where Dolly's cloning was published) for our Molecular Biology class. Sometimes technology moves slower than we think (still no flying cars! Or Eugenics Wars and Roddenberry et al. predicted) and sometimes it moves much faster. No doubt though: Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer has revolutionized research and livestock genetics. Fun fact: while the SCNT process itself was patented, the clones themselves, Dolly included, were considered unpatentable subject matter in the US because they were a natural phenomenon that did not have markedly different characteristics from anything found in nature--as they had almost the same characteristics as their natural parent.
