There's a lot of conversation happening right now about AI in government finance. And after hearing directly from 15+ CFOs in local and state government, it's worth separating what's real from what's overhyped. > What AI is actually good for: Doing the math finance directors used to do manually. If someone changes an assumption on page 4, now something is wrong on pages 11, 22, and 37. You don't know which ones until you've manually chased every dependency. Same with personnel. A Finance Director managing a $100 million budget with 400 positions isn't going to catch a 2% variance in a monthly report because there's too much to track manually. AI fixes this surfacing errors before they become a problem or cascading changes automatically. > What AI can’t do just yet: Writing your budget narrative. Yes, AI can produce something. But the core of a good budget narrative is the judgment behind it. Why did personnel costs run high? Is it structural or a one-time event? What does leadership need to understand before they vote? AI can assemble words, but it can't tell you what the number means for your community. – The near-term value of AI in government finance, as with most professions, is in removing the grunt work. Figuring out the right systems that help with these tasks without removing professional judgement is what will yield the highest ROI for any public agency looking to integrate the tech. If this is something you’re actively trying to implement in your own agency, let me know. I’d love to tell you what we’re seeing work best across our clients.

  • How do you explain the largest property tax rate reduction in 20+ years to 170,000 residents? You make the decision transparent. When Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, went revenue neutral, their budget team had to communicate what changed, why it changed, and how it would affect services and taxes. Euna OpenBook and Budget Book Studio helped turn a complex financial decision into clear, accessible information for residents, elected officials, and staff. The result: stronger transparency, easier access to information, and more informed conversations across the community. 👉 Read the case study: https://lnkd.in/gS46re5r

  • OMB just proposed the biggest overhaul of federal grant rules since 2013. The comment period closes July 13.   The proposal would make it easier to terminate grants, require E-Verify participation, and add political review before agencies issue discretionary awards. 👉 Here's what state and local grant recipients need to know: https://lnkd.in/g8WFV3Fn   #GrantManagement #FederalGrants #GovTech #PublicSector #UniformGuidance
