AI safety convos in 2026 are dominated by app-level guardrails like constitutional models and output filters. But most people ignore the glaring blind spot on the other end of the pipe: the first mile problem. Before the data even reaches the agent for the first time, it might’ve already been mapped, normalized, de-duped, translated across schemas, or joined with other sources. None of that is covered by the agent's guardrails. None of it shows up in a safety review. If your agent can't know whether your data inputs are correct, no failsafes on the application level can save you. We talk about the last mile of agentic AI all the time, but the first mile is where most security failures actually happen.

Most AI infra vendors charge per token. It’s simple and straightforward: Customer uses more tokens = Customer pays more = Vendor earns more. Unfortunately, this also means the customer’s incentive is at odds with the vendor’s. Token spend makes up anywhere between 30-40% of the total AI budget at most startups I know, and it’s a number they want to decrease. That’s why at Fleak, we charge instead per pipeline canvas, or per CPU per day for streaming throughput. Why? Our job is to reduce the number of tokens used by downstream agents. If we charged per token, we'd be charging more for lower performance. If you're evaluating AI infra in 2026, ask a vendor how they’ll charge you to see if their priorities align with yours.
