How does your pay budget compare to the rest of the industry? FMI's 2026 Compensation Trends Study found that average raises across the built environment continue to outpace the national average, but the story doesn't stop there. Commercial GCs and select specialty trades are budgeting for meaningfully higher increases than their heavy civil and institutional counterparts.   As pay practices diverge across the sector, guessing at what's competitive gets riskier. Benchmarking isn't a nice-to-have anymore. It's how firms stay ahead of turnover.   Be the first to access the full data and FMI’s analysis when the study is released: https://bit.ly/4buNjI1

Every company says people are their greatest asset. Few make leadership development the foundation of how they grow. In the latest episode of FMI's Built-In Podcast, FMI Consulting President Scott Winstead welcomes Paul Grunau, Chief Learning Officer at APi Group. Drawing on his experience across multiple leadership roles, Paul shares how APi has built a culture where developing leaders isn't a program. It's a core responsibility and a lasting competitive advantage. From scaling culture across a global organization to creating shared beliefs that drive everyday behaviors, this conversation offers practical insights for leaders looking to build organizations that thrive for the long term. When Mike Novo joined B&I Contractors in 2000, the company had around 170 employees and one office in Fort Myers. Today it's a $300 million employee-owned specialty contractor with more than 1,400 people and four offices across Florida.   That kind of organic growth exposes a hard truth for employee-owned firms: the people who know the work must learn to lead the business. Field credibility isn't enough. Scaling demands financial acumen, people leadership and enterprise-level decision-making.   Working with FMI, B&I's answer wasn't one-off training. It was a structured leadership path, so every rising leader can see the route from where they are to where the company needs them.   See how B&I is building leaders from within:   https://bit.ly/4vNTgIe

The construction industry has always been high-risk, high-reward. But today, many contractors are making the same strategic mistake: assuming every large opportunity is worth pursuing. From data centers and advanced manufacturing to mega institutional programs, the opportunities are massive, but so is the risk. The challenge isn't simply winning the work, it's choosing the right work. After all, one bad project can erase the gains from ten good ones. In this FMI Minute, Stahler McKinney discusses why disciplined project selection is becoming a competitive advantage and how contractors can position themselves for profitable, sustainable growth.
