Today, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the Patient Access to Donor Registry Information Act (SB 205) into law, creating another opportunity for more Michiganders to learn about organ, eye and tissue donation from one of their most trusted sources — their health care provider. The new law encourages primary care providers and urgent care centers to share information about organ, eye and tissue donation and the Michigan Organ Donor Registry with patients, helping ensure more people have the information they need to make an informed decision. The signing comes just one day after Gov. Whitmer signed the Living Donor Employer Tax Credit Bill (SB 301) into law, which helps remove barriers for living organ donors by supporting employers who provide paid leave. Together, these bipartisan laws represent meaningful progress in expanding access to donation, supporting those who choose to give the gift of life and helping save more lives. Thank you to Gov. For the past 18 years, Mary Pat has been a dedicated leader, helping strengthen partnerships with hospitals and health care professionals across Michigan while advancing the lifesaving mission of organ, eye and tissue donation. In her new role, Mary Pat will oversee donation authorization, donation logistics and hospital development, leading teams that work every day to support donor families, collaborate with hospitals and save lives. Congratulations, Mary Pat!

Team Michigan had an incredible showing in Denver at the 2026 Transplant Games of America, bringing home an impressive 122 medals, including 63 gold medals. The Transplant Games brought together transplant recipients, living donors, donor families and supporters from across the country to celebrate the gift of life. One of the most memorable moments of the Games was setting a new Guinness World Record title for the largest gathering of organ transplant recipients and living donors. A total of 966 people came together in a powerful celebration of resilience, hope and the life-changing impact of organ donation. HB 5338 the High School Education Bill has passed the House of Representatives and is moving to the Senate for consideration! HB 5338 encourages Michigan public high schools to provide one class period of education about organ, eye and tissue donation to ninth grade students. Under current law, students may receive only a brief segment on donation during driver’s education. By introducing factual information about donation in the classroom, students will have the knowledge they need to make an informed decision. Education saves lives. We encourage the Senate to support this important legislation and help expand education and awareness about the lifesaving impact of donation across Michigan.
