#PlasticFreeJuly is trending again, and the intent behind it is genuinely good. Reducing unnecessary waste matters. But here's the nuance that often gets lost. "Plastic-free" doesn't automatically mean "more sustainable." When you look at full Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data, including transportation weight, manufacturing energy and emissions, water use, reuse behavior, and end-of-life recovery, recyclable plastic packaging often outperforms glass, paper, and other "plastic-free" alternatives. This is especially true for food applications where product protection and shelf life matter. Sometimes the package that appears more sustainable on the shelf isn't the one with the lower overall environmental footprint. At ICPG, we believe sustainable packaging decisions should be guided by data, not assumptions.
